Cambridge Twirls Into Winter Wonderland: A Tutu-tastic Review of the Season 🩰

Hello, darlings! It's your favourite tutu-obsessed, disco-loving ballet blogger, Emma, back with a hot take on the winter ballet season in good old Cambridge! This year, the city has been positively swirling with captivating performances, each one a dazzling jewel in the crown of winter entertainment. 👑

Let's get one thing clear: I’m not talking about just ballet. This winter has been an absolute celebration of all things dance – contemporary, classical, and even a smattering of flamenco, for the extra spice. 🌶️ Every night was a chance to dress up in something fabulous, catch the glint of the stage lights in my eyes, and lose myself in the magic of human movement. Oh, and don't get me started on the outfits! 💃

A Glittering Array of Performances:

First up, we had the Cambridge Ballet Theatre with their exquisite rendition of “The Nutcracker.” You can't talk about winter ballet without acknowledging this timeless classic, and Cambridge Ballet Theatre certainly did it justice. Their rendition was both traditional and surprisingly fresh, with the set designs feeling both grand and contemporary. 🌲🍬 The Snow Queen's costume was truly magnificent, and the sugarplum fairies were positively radiant in their shimmering pink tutus. (I almost fainted from sheer pink envy, but I managed to catch a glimpse of them at the post-show reception - more about that later!). 🤫

The University of Cambridge Dance Society gave us a fantastic showcase of talent. There was such a youthful energy and a clear love of dance on stage. The variety was particularly captivating – a bold contemporary piece with bold lighting, a lighthearted jazz number that had the whole audience tapping their feet, and even a heartfelt duet that tugged at my heartstrings. I particularly loved the contemporary piece with its unexpected use of neon lighting! ⚡️ Truly edgy.

Speaking of edge, the Cambridge Contemporary Dance Company served up some serious artistry with their "Reimagined" program. The choreography was thought-provoking, raw, and absolutely mesmerising. This troupe is clearly going places. And, the use of bold colours on stage really tied it all together – we're talking vibrant greens, blues, and reds that played with the lighting like a dazzling painting.🎨

The Dance World Is Where The Fun Is:

Beyond the amazing performances, what really makes the Cambridge ballet season so special is the community spirit. There’s a wonderful energy at each event - people buzzing excitedly, dressed in their best outfits (tutus, obviously, were a must!) and enjoying a drink in the lobby afterward. ✨

And let's talk about the post-show receptions! Every night felt like a glamorous soirée – champagne, delicious snacks, and an opportunity to mingle with fellow ballet enthusiasts. Honestly, there's nothing like exchanging excited chatter about a dazzling performance with other people who have been swept away by the magic of it all! 🥰

Fashion, Fun, and Frittering: The Ultimate Ballet Experience

My favourite thing about winter ballet is the sheer glamour of it all. It's an excuse to put on my most fabulous outfit (tutus, sequins, you name it!). I always make sure to wear something statement, even if it's just a bold red lip to make a statement. 💋

I was especially thrilled this year when Cambridge Theatre brought in a glamorous new coat check! The whole experience is truly delightful – it felt like walking into a scene straight from Pretty Woman (only with ballet dancers!). And, since it was winter, they even had a cozy area set up where you could enjoy hot chocolate and chat with your friends. So luxurious!

Here’s to the Next Winter Ballet Season…

Honestly, the winter ballet season in Cambridge is pure magic. It's a delightful escape from the winter chills, a vibrant splash of creativity in the usually quieter months. I can't wait for the next season and the chance to soak up the excitement of another dazzling year of ballet. So get your tutus ready, darlings, because the magic of dance is coming back, and we’re gonna twirl right into it! 🩰
