2023 Winter Ballet Season in Derby

The air is crisp, the nights are drawing in, and that can only mean one thing: ballet season is here! And believe me, darling, Derby has gone all out for a truly dazzling display of twirls and leaps this winter.

As a tutu-loving ballerina myself (and a devoted follower of all things sparkly, naturally!), I was absolutely thrilled to dive into Derby’s winter ballet offerings. It’s a wonderful chance to escape the chill with a warm, graceful hug from the magic of dance. This year’s offerings have been absolutely divine! From the classic elegance of The Nutcracker at the Theatre Royal to the vibrant contemporary moves of Ballet Derbyshire's "Winter Wonderland", the city's stages are buzzing with the enchantment of ballet.

Speaking of enchantment, nothing gets me in the mood for winter like The Nutcracker! The Theatre Royal's production this year was simply exquisite, a visual treat for the senses. The set designs were pure fairytale charm, the costumes a vibrant mix of lavish and delicate, and the dancers, well, they absolutely sparkled! The opening scene was just breathtaking. A beautiful swirl of swirling snowflakes, dazzling lighting, and the infectious energy of the children's ensemble truly set the stage for the magical journey to come.

This classic tale never gets old. I especially love how the performance seamlessly blends the joy and innocence of the Christmas story with the thrilling choreography of the battle scene and the otherworldly beauty of the Kingdom of Sweets. Each character was brought to life with such exquisite detail – the Sugar Plum Fairy a delicate vision in pink, the Snow Queen an elegant, ethereal queen, and of course, Clara’s wide-eyed wonder radiating from the stage!

Of course, winter isn't all about snow-globe charm, and Derby’s ballet scene truly embraces the eclectic! Ballet Derbyshire's “Winter Wonderland” was a welcome breath of fresh air, showcasing the beauty and athleticism of contemporary dance in a modern interpretation of winter themes. From icy-inspired movements that captured the stillness of the snow-covered landscape to the dynamic choreography that mirrored the flurry of a snowstorm, the production perfectly evoked the beauty and dynamism of winter in its myriad forms.

Ballet Derbyshire is all about pushing boundaries, and this production really exemplified their commitment to bringing exciting and original pieces to the stage. I was especially blown away by the use of light and shadow – creating a haunting atmosphere for the piece and making those stunning, fluid movements seem almost otherworldly! The dancers really did shine! Their technical prowess was dazzling, but even more important, they poured such emotion and story-telling into every leap and turn. They gave us the power of winter through their dance.
