Let’s face it, when it’s cold and gloomy outside, nothing feels as magical as a night spent immersed in the beauty and grace of ballet. And trust me, this year’s performances have been an absolute dream, bringing warmth to our hearts and a twinkle to our eyes.
Now, if there’s anything I love more than a perfectly pirouetted arabesque, it's a season bursting with dazzling costumes, from whimsical fairy frocks to sweeping tutus that would make even the most seasoned ballet aficionado swoon.
This year’s season kicked off with the classic "Nutcracker," at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. And let me tell you, it was utterly enchanting. Watching the Sugar Plum Fairy's grand entrance felt like stepping into a winter wonderland! The dancing was flawless, the costumes breathtaking (that tutus! Chef's kiss), and the festive music, well, let’s just say it put me right in the mood for hot chocolate and mince pies. The magic was so infectious, you couldn't help but be swept away in the wonder of it all.
Next up was "Sleeping Beauty," presented by the Irish National Ballet at the Grand Canal Theatre. Oh my, this was pure spectacle! From the intricate set designs to the flamboyant costumes (especially Princess Aurora’s regal gown! Can we talk about that colour scheme?!), it was a feast for the eyes. I loved the playful touch of humour in the choreography, too. It kept things light and lively. Honestly, it felt like we were transported back to a magical fairytale - only with a little bit more glitter.
Now, speaking of magic, nothing feels quite as magical as a winter evening at the Abbey Theatre watching "Giselle." The sheer emotionality of the choreography and the intricate story unfolding right before my eyes had me captivated. There were definitely a few tears shed – I’m a sucker for a good ballet weepie!
The grand finale of this tutu-tastic season was "Swan Lake" back at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. And let's just say, it delivered the drama! I’ve always been a sucker for the classic, melancholic tone of Swan Lake and this year’s performance did not disappoint. It was hauntingly beautiful, filled with powerful performances and exquisite dance sequences. I found myself utterly absorbed in the tale of betrayal and transformation.
I loved how each production offered a unique perspective, a different flavour of the winter season. From the sugar-spun delight of the Nutcracker to the dramatic intensity of Swan Lake, this season showcased the sheer range and talent of Dublin's ballet companies.
Of course, no winter ballet season would be complete without a bit of that holiday magic! After the performances, I often found myself lingering, savouring the last moments of the theatre's warm ambiance. It’s like a delicious after-dinner treat. You know what I mean?
