2023 Winter Ballet Season in Middleton

Oh my gosh, babes, you wouldn’t believe the absolute magic that has been happening in Middleton this winter! As you know, I live for this time of year, it’s like my second birthday! The arrival of the festive season means two things: a flurry of delicious festive treats, and a flurry of stunning, spectacular ballet productions – AKA: tutu season.

I mean, let's be real, isn't the joy of watching a ballet at Christmas time just next level amazing? I mean, those sparkling costumes, the elegant dancers, and the incredible music…it's like pure fantasy come to life. And what better way to embrace the festive spirit than a beautiful performance in a majestic, twinkling theatre, right?

This year, Middleton has truly outdone itself in terms of showcasing its love for all things tutus and twirls. So let's dive into a mini-review of my favourites.

The Classic

First up, we have the Middleton Ballet Theatre's production of “The Nutcracker.” You can't really talk about winter ballet without acknowledging the classic that has become a festive tradition, like mince pies and Mariah Carey, right? The production was just perfection, a beautiful, heartwarming story about a young girl and her magical journey on Christmas Eve. From the stunning snowstorm scene, complete with glittering flakes of “fake” snow, to the magical journey to the Land of Sweets, everything felt wonderfully immersive, like being transported straight into the heart of the story.

My personal favourite bit, apart from the Sugar Plum Fairy's stunning costume which was just SO sparkly and pink (need I say more!), was the waltzing flower section. The costumes were SO cute! You know, that beautiful mix of floral hues that’s like a dream. There’s no denying that these talented dancers and their stunning costumes really brought the story to life.

Something New

If you’re looking for a bit more excitement and drama, Middleton Ballet’s “Dance through Time” was a real breath of fresh air! This contemporary ballet showcased the talents of some incredibly versatile dancers, with styles spanning the decades from the swingin’ 60s right up to the funky disco 80s! The costume design was fab, from the vintage bouffants of the 60s to the shiny metallic numbers that truly captured the spirit of the 80s. This wasn’t just ballet, babes – this was performance art!

I found the music in this production to be particularly noteworthy, blending original compositions with classics, like You Should Be Dancing by Bee Gees, in a way that both celebrated the different eras and kept the performance feeling incredibly fresh. Oh, and you won’t believe the disco ball finale!

More Than Just Ballet

The real beauty of winter ballet is that it isn’t just about a performance. It’s also a community gathering. The theatre’s lobby was just buzzing before the performance, everyone chatting away with excitement, clutching their hot chocolate and pastries – such a fun and festive vibe! After the performances, I always have a catch-up with my friends, whether it’s at a nearby pub for a hot mulled wine or over a late-night cheese board at home, sharing our thoughts on the evening.

But for me, the real heart of this festive tradition lies in the sheer artistry and skill that’s on display in the performances. Whether you're a die-hard ballet fan or a casual observer, winter ballet offers something for everyone. And as I said, what better way to embrace the holiday spirit than with a few hours of stunning music, incredible performances and just a little bit of magic!
