It’s like a magical winter wonderland of twirling, leaping and graceful pirouettes – the most fantastic time for a true tutu enthusiast like myself. I just love seeing the sheer joy on people’s faces at the ballet, their eyes twinkling as much as the fairy lights decorating the theatre!
This year, Northolt has pulled out all the stops with its incredible line-up of winter ballets. You’d think with all this glorious, snowy weather we’d have to hibernate in our fluffy jumpers and be content with steaming cups of hot cocoa. But no, Northolt is buzzing with life and laughter thanks to these gorgeous ballets.
A Whole Lot of Pink and Whimsy! 💖
For starters, we have the divine "Pink Panther's Christmas". Now, if you're as much of a disco queen as I am, you just can't miss this! The costumes, my darling, are fabulous - all shimmery pink sequins, dazzling diamonds and more feather boas than you can shake a leg at. Think “Saturday Night Fever” but with the grace of a swan, the passion of a flamenco dancer and a touch of disco magic!
The music! Oh my, the music! It's a delightful mix of classic festive tunes with a funky, modern twist. Imagine a sleigh ride that’s part Tchaikovsky, part Chic. There were even nods to ABBA. The story? Pure joy. A cheeky pink panther is a bit too preoccupied with dancing to help the North Pole elves get ready for Christmas – chaos, hilarity, and plenty of toe-tapping fun ensue!
From Russia with Love – A Dance Revolution!
For something a bit more traditional, there’s “The Nutcracker.” But let me tell you, this was not your average "Nutcracker." It was absolutely breath-taking! It brought tears to my eyes, it really did.
We have the spectacular set design – a fairytale winter world with glittering snowflakes, magically dancing snowmen, and the most elaborate, most gorgeous, Christmas tree you've ever seen! Then, of course, there are the costumes: sparkling dresses that were practically begging for me to add them to my Pinterest board! The dance numbers, though... Just magical.
It’s the perfect celebration of classic ballet with some spectacular modern elements. It is so poignant yet also has a powerful emotional impact. Yes, the classical dancing was spectacular but the powerful story is really what makes this production sing. It was definitely the highlight of my week!
From a Classic to Contemporary:
And we can't forget "The Little Mermaid.” My fellow fans of the classic Disney movie will adore this! You'll have a whale of a time watching this vibrant spectacle unfold with stunning sets and spectacular aquatic-themed choreography. The dance is absolutely stunning and features an energetic ensemble cast – and they've nailed the character's signature personalities too! You’ve got Ariel's sass, Ursula's menace and Prince Eric's dashing charm. And who can forget that oh-so-lovely iconic tune "Part of Your World”? I admit to getting a bit choked up when they played it.
