I have to admit, there’s something utterly magical about heading to The Lowry Theatre for the opening night of their annual ballet season. You know what to expect - an array of world-class performances, breathtaking costumes, and a dash of spectacular set design - and yet, every time I’m still swept off my feet!

This year's highlight was, without a doubt, "Winter Dreams" – an enchanting new production by the talented local company, Northern Lights Dance. Their interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s iconic score was stunning – full of sweeping, passionate movement, with enough drama and grandeur to hold your attention for the entire three hours. The scene with the snow queen, a figure of pure icy grace, in her opulent blue-and-white gown is one I'll remember forever.

The New Wave: Ballet With a Beat

I'm not afraid to admit, I love my fair share of contemporary dance. So imagine my delight when I saw "Disco Inferno" at the Salford Arts Theatre! It was like stepping into a 70s fever dream, with all the fabulous energy and rhythmic abandon you could imagine.

Led by the innovative “Dance Fever” collective, "Disco Inferno" featured dynamic choreography that perfectly complemented the pulsating disco music. It was raw, it was thrilling, and most importantly, it was fun! And it certainly pushed the boundaries of what I previously thought ballet could be. This performance felt as if the dancers themselves were having a fabulous time – their infectious energy spilling out into the audience and turning the theatre into a giant disco ball.

Community Spirit: When Dance Knows No Age

Speaking of energy, Salford's local community is overflowing with it! And that was clear to see at the “Winter Wonderland" performances put on by the Salford Dance Collective. I can’t even begin to express how much I adore the energy and dedication of these amateur dancers.

Every performance – from "The Nutcracker" to “Swan Lake” – was filled with sheer enthusiasm and raw talent. Seeing the excitement on their faces and the dedication in their movements was incredibly inspiring. It’s a true testament to the unifying power of dance – uniting generations and proving that age is no barrier to pursuing your passion.

Behind The Scenes: Where Magic Meets Reality

I wouldn’t be a true ballet aficionado if I didn't sneak a peek behind the curtain! The opportunity to watch the Salford Dance Academy students in their final recital was pure joy. These budding young ballerinas are absolute superstars! I saw such dedication in their eyes and sheer determination in their movements, all set against the beautiful backdrop of the Salford Museum & Art Gallery.

Watching them flawlessly execute complex routines, their tiny pink shoes barely touching the floor, really put the dedication required into perspective. These are the future of ballet, and I for one, can’t wait to see them grace the big stage in the years to come!
