Winter has arrived, the days are getting shorter, but for us, it's a season filled with glitz, grace, and so. much. tulle. The Southall winter ballet season has officially kicked off, and I'm absolutely thrilled to share my sparkly-eyed observations with you all!
Now, you might think ballet is all about elegance and strict adherence to tradition, and you wouldn't be entirely wrong. But in Southall, things get a bit…well…let's just say fierce. There's an energy here, a raw, unfiltered passion for dance that oozes from the stage and makes you want to stand up and clap along (which, FYI, is perfectly acceptable).
A Touch of the Pink & A Dash of Disco
Forget the standard beige ballet shoes! We're talking shimmering pink tutus that wouldn't be out of place in a Kylie Minogue video, vibrant, candy-coloured costumes, and music that goes beyond Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake – we're talking a full-on disco dance party vibe! I'm not gonna lie, I even spotted a pair of metallic silver platform heels in "The Nutcracker," which may have been a tad less than traditional, but completely brought the house down.
Local Talent Shines Bright
Southall's ballet scene is more than just a bunch of posh, private schools - there's a truly community-driven spirit here, and the talent that comes from within the area is astonishing. This season has showcased so many incredibly talented young dancers, many of them local Southallers. It's so heartwarming to see these youngsters grow and shine on the stage.

There are workshops, masterclasses, open rehearsals, and even a festive market outside the theatre with delicious snacks and handmade gifts. "The Sleeping Beauty": I’ve seen countless Sleeping Beauties in my time, but Southall’s production was utterly captivating! The dancing was spectacular, and they used stunning backdrops to bring the magical world of the fairytale to life.
"Nutcracker Revisited": This reimagined Nutcracker, incorporating a bit of the contemporary and a lot of disco, was truly electric! The cast was so dynamic, and their energy was infectious.
"The Swan Lake Show Off": Now, this is not for the faint of heart. I'm talking contemporary ballet, bold expressions, and yes, even some acrobatic feats thrown in for good measure. Definitely pushed boundaries, definitely impressed.
