This little corner of Surrey has become a haven for ballet lovers, with enough performances to keep even the most fervent tutuworshipper happy!
This season, the ballet bug has bitten Walton hard! You wouldn't believe the excitement swirling around the local dance studios, schools and, of course, the magnificent Walton Playhouse! This little gem is buzzing with activity, and it's all thanks to a vibrant community who just can't get enough of that iconic pink, twirling, and pure grace!
Firstly, the Walton Youth Ballet, those amazing youngsters! They really knocked my sparkly socks off! Their rendition of 'The Nutcracker' was nothing short of spectacular. Seeing these tiny tots with their little buns and beautifully detailed costumes bring Tchaikovsky to life - it was so inspiring! It’s not just about the polished professionals – it's seeing the joy, the dedication, and the raw talent radiating from these mini stars that makes my heart melt.
And who can resist a bit of Tchaikovsky at this time of year? The festive tunes always set the mood, and let's be honest, a little festive music is practically essential when your outfit features a shimmering, sparkly tutu! The Waltz of the Flowers made the whole auditorium practically shimmer! Just the sheer amount of pink tutus, swirling and dipping in unison - absolute magic!
And if the youth ballet wasn't enough, Walton Playhouse is really going all out. Their winter season has a something for everyone! I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Winter's Tale', a real treat for lovers of Shakespeare and dance. I can't lie - I totally fell for the drama and theatricality of it all, with its dramatic story, the sumptuous costumes, and those oh-so-expressive movements. It felt like stepping right into a magical realm, even if a little chilly.
For those who prefer a little more modern twist, the Walton Ballet Company, which includes dancers with many years of experience, has you covered. 'Disco Inferno', their latest show, was absolutely out of this world! I mean, what better way to celebrate winter than with some fantastic music and amazing dance routines that would make even John Travolta blush? I loved how they incorporated disco lights, dazzling costumes, and a super fun, upbeat atmosphere into their interpretation of classic ballets. You know what? It's proof that ballet isn't just for stuffy theatres - it's totally versatile, exciting, and accessible!
One thing that's absolutely essential for a great ballet season is the spirit of community, and let me tell you, Walton truly has that! Everyone's so passionate about supporting the arts and everyone just feels so enthusiastic and excited. The backstage atmosphere buzzed with energy. From volunteers helping to get everyone into their gorgeous costumes to the little dancers giggling and nervously anticipating their big moment on stage, there's a special energy here that can’t be replicated anywhere else. It's honestly infectious!
Let’s not forget the beautiful backdrop that is the quaint and charming town of Walton upon Thames! Between the beautifully decorated Christmas tree lights, the warmth radiating from the quaint pubs, and the lovely community that embraces the season, this little town makes the perfect place for an enchanting evening of ballet!
Of course, a night out with ballet can't be complete without a celebratory drink and a little chit-chat about our favourite performances! The charming atmosphere of The White Hart made for a fabulous post-ballet rendezvous – they just know how to treat a tutu-clad girl, you know. They've even got an amazing disco ball - I’m pretty sure the dancers felt they had to step back onto the floor just for another round of spins!
