Dearest readers, welcome to the latest edition of "Swans & Sequins", your window into the captivating world of ballet and art, where beauty knows no bounds. Itās a new season, a fresh start, and this month, as we sashay through the changing leaves and the crisp autumn air, we find ourselves mesmerized by an array of dazzling performances from London to Paris and beyond.
First stop, London, the city that never sleeps, especially when it comes to its love affair with dance. Iām absolutely smitten with the Royal Balletās latest production of "Giselle", a masterpiece that never fails to enchant. This production is truly magical; every step is an ethereal whisper, every turn a brushstroke of grace. Natalia Osipova, in the role of the tragic heroine, Giselle, is simply breathtaking; her despair and passion are palpable, her leaps seemingly defying gravity. The story itself, of love, betrayal, and the supernatural, continues to be as relevant today as it was over 150 years ago. And those haunting waltzes! They make my heart skip a beat every time. Itās a must-see for any serious ballet enthusiast.
Staying in London, I made a beeline to Sadlerās Wells, where I found myself completely captivated by the Rambert Dance Company's stunning rendition of "The Rite of Spring." I love the raw emotion that pervades the performance; itās a masterpiece of energy and brutal beauty, and the sheer athleticism of the dancers, like those graceful panthers, never fails to impress me. Of course, no discussion of this work is complete without mentioning its unforgettable choreography by the late, great Vaslav Nijinsky, a man whose genius forever redefined the art of dance. If you're looking for a dance that truly shakes things up, this is the one.
Across the Channel, I'm completely besotted with the Paris Opera Ballet's production of "Swan Lake." As you know, I am forever in awe of Tchaikovsky's score, it's simply divine. However, this production has been revitalized with an all-new set and costumes, giving it a modern touch that feels both familiar and fresh. The balletās stars, Aurelie Dupont and Mathieu Ganio, simply took my breath away with their extraordinary technique and emotional depth. The contrast between Odette, the white swan, and Odile, the black swan, is just brilliant and played out flawlessly. Don't miss it.
While in Paris, I couldn't resist visiting the MusƩe Rodin, home to the stunning work of Auguste Rodin, whose sculptures continue to fascinate me with their passion and sensuality. "The Thinker" continues to be one of my favorite pieces, but his collection of dancers and models is a must-see for any dancer. He beautifully captures the ephemeral grace and artistry of the human body, giving it such beauty and life.
Traveling further afield, I've heard whispers of a fascinating new dance company emerging in Barcelona. Iām not a big fan of contemporary dance, I admit, but this company is doing something truly special, mixing the lyrical beauty of classical ballet with a dash of contemporary flair. The result is something quite magical; a seamless blend of precision and freedom, of tradition and innovation. I canāt wait to tell you more about this amazing group in my next column!
Letās return to London where we must talk about fashion. Now, when we discuss the "Art of Dance" what do we mean? Fashion! Our dance shoes, the tights, the elegant leotards ā it is so important. It is important to dress like a true ballerina. So darling, it is time we get together to go shopping.
Some Must Have Styles for the Autumn 1996 Ballet Lover- **Cashmere, darling. This is absolutely essential.** It can be a wrap, a scarf or a hat. If we can afford it we should have one of each. You can also opt for angora. Either way we need the warmth.
- **Satin shoes are essential!** Nothing shouts more elegant. And I do mean āelegance,ā not expensive! For autumn, be prepared to dress more for warmth and class. If you canāt find real satin, find silk, as this is the closest you will get!
- **A velvet dress! ** You need at least one darling. If youāre ready for that grand gala event, and have a date or special event then choose a burgundy or navy colour and match this with our trusty silk scarf or shawl. If itās a lighter evening, look to a deep plum or even a petrol blue! And wear your elegant jewellery!
For the rest of our ballet outfits I would strongly advise going to a specialised shop, I mean, darling, you are a dancer, so we should be purchasing from dancersā specialists. You don't want cheap tights, and nothing worse than flimsy ribbons that break. A real dance shop can show you some really classic combinations. Do I suggest we take the new outfits to the gala at Covent Garden to show off?
Now I have one more fabulous thing to mention! We can all be princesses! This is something I saw in a small shop in Knightsbridge. Imagine itā¦ Our āoff-duty dancer wear.ā This would be an exquisite velvet track suit and hoodie! And the detail? A beautiful silk tie for the neck of the top! All very decadent. Imagine all the stares from people looking up at us as we saunter into that boutique cafe near Harrods in our elegant and fashionable velvet sets.
And lastly darling, it would be rude not to discuss what I see on all the āin-crowdā. So the gossip? āThe balletā - thatās the new phrase darling! Not only is this what we see being used as a title in so many books and films, even on television, but when speaking, the fashionistas are calling ballet āThe Balletā. That tells you something about where ādanceā is going. People want to feel classy and luxurious. So thatās why the fashion editors at Vogue have decided āballet wearā will become a major āItā item this autumn. Expect to see velvet on the catwalks, the colour and design, is definitely in right now. Itās all happening, darling!
Well my dearest readers, I must bring our ballet journal to an end. As I prepare for another thrilling season of performance and passion, I look forward to sharing my adventures with you. Until next time, stay fabulous!
