The Dance Chronicles: August 1999

By Isabella de Valois, Contributing Editor

Darling, August! A time for picnics in the park, the sun shimmering on the Thames, and of course, the endless flurry of dazzling ballet productions sweeping the world. And you know I wouldn't dream of keeping you in the dark.

From the cobbled streets of Prague to the glittering opera houses of Vienna, let's delve into the divine world of pirouettes, pliĂŠs, and oh-so-fabulous tutus. So, slip into something stylish, pour a cup of Earl Grey, and let's commence!

Prague’s Swan Lake: A Night of Romantic Dreams

Darling, Prague simply knows how to charm. Picture it, a setting steeped in history, a breathtaking performance, and my absolute favorite, the exquisitely elegant "Swan Lake." I recently took a whirlwind trip to the Czech Republic to witness the National Theatre's rendition, and let me tell you, I felt a bit like a princess waltzing into a fairy tale. The dancers, with their lithe, graceful movements and passionate interpretations, quite literally took my breath away. I especially adored the ethereal Natalia Osipova, her portrayal of Odette/Odile was so raw and emotionally charged. But darling, what made the evening truly magical was the magical setting. The historic theatre itself seemed to echo the longing and drama of Tchaikovsky's timeless masterpiece. Absolutely unforgettable.

Paris's "La Bayadère": A Feast for the Senses

Darling, we all know that Parisian flair is simply divine, but let me tell you, the OpÊra National de Paris raised the bar even higher with their rendition of "La Bayadère." A symphony of colour, sensuality, and grand ballet traditions - what more could one ask for? The dazzling costumes were enough to make any woman swoon. And the choreography, a beautiful blend of grandeur and refined movements, was like a vision dancing in my mind. And oh, the Grand Pas de Deux in the final act - simply mesmerizing. A true testament to the power of art and artistry, and an unforgettable spectacle to savor for a lifetime.

London’s Royal Ballet: A Symphony of Artistic Mastery

Our very own Royal Ballet always delivers, darling! Their rendition of "Romeo and Juliet" is truly something to behold, with a stunning combination of choreography, music, and, most importantly, exceptional dancing. The tragic tale of young love and star-crossed destiny has rarely felt this poignant. You practically feel the heartache of Romeo, the fierce determination of Juliet, all within the confines of the hallowed Covent Garden stage. The Royal Ballet, darling, is the quintessential epitome of the elegance and tradition we hold so dear. An experience I wouldn’t miss for the world.

Beyond the Classics: Exploring the Modern Ballet Scene

While classical ballets hold a special place in my heart, darling, one must always keep an eye out for emerging talents and new artistic expressions. And in the world of contemporary dance, there are some simply sensational things happening.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Now this is an absolute must-see, my darling! The raw energy, the electrifying power, the profound stories…Alvin Ailey's works speak to us on a soul level. A perfect example, their piece “Revelations.” Every movement tells a tale of resilience, freedom, and the sheer beauty of human expression. The Ailey dancers are true forces of nature, each possessing such stunning grace and precision in every single move. A night at the theatre that will leave you truly moved and uplifted, and leave you longing for more.

"The Dying Swan" by Mikhail Fokine: Timeless Beauty Reimagined

I must confess, darling, that I’m absolutely enchanted by "The Dying Swan" this month! This dance, so fragile yet powerful, simply never ceases to captivate. I recently saw a superb rendition at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan by Sylvie Guillem, and it was nothing short of magical. This ballet speaks volumes with its sheer simplicity and grace. Guillem's performance was divine. Each movement so delicate, her expression so heartfelt - you could literally feel the swan’s pain, and beauty, and grace as it took its final bow.

A Little Bit of Something Different: Cirque du Soleil - "O"

I know what you're thinking, darling - "Cirque du Soleil? Isn't that more for kids?" But let me tell you, "O" is not just a circus, darling, it's an exquisite sensory experience. The water, the dazzling acrobatics, the ethereal costumes, it's all blended to perfection. It's the ultimate fusion of dance, theater, and circus arts, leaving you breathless and absolutely in awe.

Around the World: Dance Destinations to Add to Your Bucket List

Moscow: The Bolshoi - The heart and soul of Russian ballet, darling! It’s simply an institution of tradition and artistry.

St. Petersburg: The Mariinsky Theater - This jewel of the ballet world is where legends are born, where beauty and brilliance intersect.

Buenos Aires: The Colon Theater - For those of you seeking a truly electrifying experience, a dash of Latin passion mixed with masterful ballet skills - you've found it.

And Now for the Latest in Fashion & Dance

The perfect outfit is essential, darling! To celebrate August, why not try something breezy and feminine. Imagine a flowy white dress with delicate lace accents. It's timeless elegance, perfect for any performance, from the graceful moves of classical ballet to the energy of a contemporary piece. Add a pop of color with a bright scarf or a beautiful flower, and you're ready to waltz through a world of art and dance. Remember, darling, confidence is key, so carry yourself like the exquisite, stylish, ballerina you are. And, above all, be sure to look elegant while looking like you don’t even have to try.

Dance Tips for the Month

• Take a ballet class! Nothing beats the feeling of gliding through space, feeling your muscles lengthen and your mind grow quiet. • Embrace the magic of live music. Go to a ballet performance with an orchestra, let the music carry you away.

And my dearest darlings, remember - life is a stage, and it's our duty to move with grace, elegance, and, above all, joy! So put on your dancing shoes, get ready to prance, and have an exquisite month. And don't forget, always make an entrance that will leave a lasting impression.

Yours, in the swirl of a tutu,

Isabella
