August Blooms: Ballet and Beyond

Darling, oh darling, August! What a month! London's practically pulsating with culture, and the rest of the world, well, it's just catching up. I've been flitting from rehearsal to performance, each one a new shade in the spectrum of our art, from the exquisite and heartbreaking, to the daring and avant-garde. And darling, I must tell you all about it!

The Royal Ballet: Swan Lake's Everlasting Charm

You simply cannot deny the elegance of a classic. Back at Covent Garden, we were all captivated by the Royal Ballet's rendition of *Swan Lake*. As a professional, it's easy to become blasé with these standards, but let me tell you, the sheer perfection of the choreography, the seamless transitions, the haunting score by Tchaikovsky... simply breathtaking. And then there's Natalia Osipova! Her portrayal of Odette, vulnerable and regal, was utterly mesmerizing. You simply must see this, my dears. I swear, my heart skipped a beat when she lifted that diaphanous tutu in the final scene... divine.

Paris: Bold, Modern Ballet

Now Paris is where we truly go beyond the norm, where imagination takes the reins and convention is delightfully cast aside. I caught a dazzling performance of Angelin Preljocaj's *Blanche Neige*, at the Théâtre National de Chaillot. The costumes! Imagine Snow White in all white, a stunning vision of minimalist chic, contrasting sharply with the darker hues of the woods, with its gothic charm and unsettling beauty. And oh darling, the dancing! Preljocaj is simply brilliant with his explorations of the human condition, using the beauty of ballet to reflect the darkness, the desires, and the complexities of our existence. I must confess, it wasn't the easiest performance, not a sugarplum fairy tale for sure. But there is an honest, almost raw beauty in it that really stays with you. It was a ballet that whispered a little secret to my soul. And, it's definitely one that sparked conversation - so terribly chic!

New York's New Blood

Now, I've always adored the vibrancy and daring of the American ballet scene. This month I saw the newest work from Kyle Abraham, a truly gifted artist whose choreography is daring and intensely modern. His piece at the Joyce Theatre in New York, *Another Breath* left me, well, breathtaking! It's a profound meditation on life, loss, and resilience, delivered with explosive energy and heartfelt tenderness. The performance was both physically demanding and emotionally resonant. Kyle, you have such a gifted eye for talent, he managed to find just the right dancers for his vision. A definite must-see, especially if you love seeing raw talent emerge and shake things up a little! It’s good to be a little scandalous, my dears, every now and then.

Beyond the Pointe Shoe

Oh darling, life is far too interesting to be confined to just the studio. So naturally, I indulge in all that inspires me! In Berlin, the *Biennale for Contemporary Music* captivated my soul, pushing the boundaries of what I thought I knew about sound and form. They have the most divine sound installations! It’s art that really makes you *feel* something! You know, some say my art is cold, aloof, too controlled. But those who see this contemporary music truly get it, that my world, the world of dance, isn’t just about prettiness or showing off. It’s an emotion that comes to life! The soul, darling, the soul.

Artistic Escapades

I was just in Paris again (oh darling, how I do love that city!) this time taking in the captivating work of *Sarah Lucas* at the Serpentine Gallery. Her art is daring, thought-provoking, and beautifully audacious. It challenges and invites you in, a reflection of the human experience that is raw, honest, and utterly captivating.

I'm still a dancer at heart, and the energy and creativity found on the stage still electrifies me. It is, after all, my life’s work. But, venturing beyond the traditional world of ballet keeps me stimulated and connected, like fresh water poured into the chalice of my soul, my darling, it’s a necessity. The most important things? Always keeping that spark alive, always striving to see beauty everywhere, always wanting to find meaning in every fleeting moment of our artistic existence!

And oh darling, there is a certain *je ne sais quoi* to this season, a new and brilliant color in the kaleidoscope of life. A new dance, a new artistic voice calling out from within us. A fresh step for us to explore... dare we say a *coup de foudre*! Now that would be most delightful. Don’t you agree?
