The Pointe of View: A World of Grace and Beauty

November 2008

Darling, this November has been simply divine. My little black book has been overflowing with events to see - ballet, theatre, art exhibitions, oh the exquisite choices! So, settle in with your afternoon tea, a spot of Earl Grey perhaps, and let's dissect some of the most delectable cultural treats.

First off, my darlings, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Where else would a season start but with a classic like Swan Lake? And let me tell you, the Russian State Ballet, with its magnificent technique, made it a true masterpiece. The iconic white tutus, the dramatic interplay of Odette and Odile... it simply swept me away. You just know when you're watching real ballet history being made, don't you?

But let's not get stuck in the past, darlings! Later this month, the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center. This isn't your traditional Nutcracker, honey. I heard a little birdie tell me that it's a fresh interpretation, with the choreography by that darling Christopher Wheeldon. I'm absolutely dying to see what he does with such a famous piece! I know the costuming is fabulous, there's a real Parisian feel - it's supposed to be to die for.

Then there's Paris! Where else but the Opéra Garnier for some sheer theatrical glamour? It's not just the grand architecture and crystal chandeliers, darlings. We're talking pure talent. I heard the Bolshoi Ballet is making a guest appearance - you simply can't miss that.

But of course, we can't forget about the wonderful world of modern ballet. It's not all grand pas de deux and classical movements, you know. Just this weekend, I saw this exquisite little piece by Akram Khan. Now this is a dancer you must know about - incredibly creative, passionate... just so exciting! And the costumes - divine, darling! Silk and shimmering gold... a real feast for the eyes. The whole experience left me totally breathless.

It's not all about the big names though, my dears. Don't dismiss a small, local company simply because it's not in the glossiest magazine. I saw the most touching performance by a tiny dance group at the Arts Centre in Bath last month. The story, the sheer beauty and fluidity of their movements - it took my breath away. It reminded me why we all fall in love with dance, why we simply have to share these moments with the world. It was an absolute treasure.

Speaking of beauty, the art scene is buzzing. At the Tate Modern, darlings, is this truly sensational exhibition - it features some stunning works from the Impressionists. I’m utterly besotted with the luminous colours and the capturing of light. You must go - it’s an absolute must-see.

Another exhibition I was lucky enough to attend last week - this was all about sculpture at the Serpentine Gallery, darling. They’ve curated some seriously inspiring work by the new generation of sculptors, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was incredibly thought-provoking - the pieces, their meaning - oh, it left me wanting more! And, darling, I absolutely adore the way the space itself seems to breathe with life, thanks to the clever way they’ve displayed the art.

My dear, I could write all day about the beauty, grace, and emotion that fills these incredible spaces - I could list the art and ballet that inspired me this month for days and days. But darling, sometimes you have to get up and actually see it for yourself. I encourage you to do just that - let the beauty and emotions sweep you away. It's an intoxicating, captivating feeling and I promise, you'll want to experience it again and again.

Before I dash off to meet with my dear friend at the Royal Opera House for their Gala Ball, let's make sure we've not missed anything:

  • Ballet Essentials
    • A new ballet performance of Swan Lake is premiering at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden with the Russian State Ballet - I can’t imagine anything more delightful.
    • In the same space, watch for a new ballet from the world-famous Sadler's Wells theatre.
