Darling, oh darling! The summer solstice has come and gone, leaving a trail of glittery dust and breathless memories of divine dance. From London’s hallowed halls to Paris’s chic cafes, the world has been consumed by a kaleidoscope of swirling tutus and athletic prowess. Let's dive into the most exciting, daring, and simply delicious performances that graced the stage last month, shall we?

**London’s Ballet Scene:**

Ah, London! The city that never sleeps, but for a precious few weeks in July, everyone does. In a dizzying swirl of champagne bubbles and perfumed whispers, the Royal Ballet captivated us once again with its production of “Giselle,” that quintessential ballet of love and loss. The exquisite Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company graced the Royal Opera House with their stunning rendition of “The Sleeping Beauty.” Honestly, dear, I had tears in my eyes by the third act, such was the poignant grace and utter technical perfection! The air throbbed with the melancholy grandeur of Tchaikovsky's score, and I just felt every stolen glance, every sigh of longing, every yearning. A triumph indeed!

  • The Royal Ballet's Giselle - Oh, this classic tale always gives me chills. The depth of emotion pouring from the dancers, and the masterful choreography, was nothing short of astounding. Alina Cojocaru's portrayal of Giselle was hauntingly beautiful, her fragile innocence a captivating juxtaposition with the fiery fury of the Wilis.
  • Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company's The Sleeping Beauty - A tour de force, dear, simply breathtaking. It was as if I was whisked away to a fairytale world where time stood still and beauty reigned supreme. Victoria Tereshkina was an ethereal Aurora, radiating both elegance and strength, with her effortless jumps and intricate footwork.

Paris's Whirlwind of Performances:

Paris, the City of Lights, pulsed with artistic energy, a bohemian energy, this past July. And, dear, was it ever a thrill to be right in the heart of it! At the Palais Garnier, the Paris Opera Ballet, showcased its raw talent in a spectacular production of “Don Quixote,” a ballet so full of energy and joyous leaps, that I nearly fainted from pure delight. The dancers moved like poetry, their vibrant costumes swirling through the air, evoking the charm and charisma of Cervantes’s iconic novel. Speaking of charisma, let's not forget the utterly captivating “Bolero” at the Opéra National de Paris. The sheer drama, the intoxicating music, the raw, pure emotion – it was all so enthralling, dear, and the finality of the dancer’s death, well, let's just say it gave me shivers!

  • Paris Opera Ballet's Don Quixote - Pure entertainment! This ballet had everything: flamboyant characters, daring leaps, and vibrant costumes, it was like watching a celebration of life unfolding on stage!
  • Opéra National de Paris’s “Bolero” - Oh, this performance, dear! It was intense, powerful, and absolutely breathtaking. The way the dancer captured the intensity of the music was something to behold, a truly unforgettable experience.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Ballet in Tokyo:

Japan has always held a special place in my heart for its delicate aesthetic and graceful refinement, and its ballet scene is no exception! In the enchanting city of Tokyo, the renowned Tokyo Ballet offered a refreshingly different perspective with its stunning performance of “La Bayadère.” This tale of love, betrayal, and devotion is a timeless classic, but this interpretation breathed new life into it, offering a more modern and ethereal interpretation, while retaining its grandeur. Every movement felt fresh, each turn exquisitely elegant. The vibrant costumes and impressive sets only added to the visual spectacle. A perfect balance of tradition and contemporary finesse!

  • Tokyo Ballet's "La Bayadère" - The beauty, the detail, the passion, it all felt utterly exquisite. This wasn't your grandmother's Bayadere, dear! The choreography was fluid and evocative, and the story, oh, the story! I wept with Nikia, cheered with Gamzatti, and trembled with the very soul of the Shadow King!

The New York Experience:

No ballet season would be complete without a trip to the city that never sleeps, my darling! The New York City Ballet continued to dazzle, showcasing a beautiful combination of traditional ballets with captivating new works by young, innovative choreographers. A notable mention goes to the company's new production of "The Nutcracker," which was a captivating visual feast with its whimsical costumes and the magical atmosphere. The music of Tchaikovsky, of course, was absolutely exquisite.

  • The New York City Ballet’s The Nutcracker - Oh, darling, to see so much talent on one stage! The young dancers were spectacular, each embodying their role with an irresistible charm and boundless energy, but of course, there were no complaints about the veteran dancers.

Across the Pond in Berlin:

Germany, always the home of innovation, is now at the forefront of avant-garde dance as well. I made my way to Berlin last month to catch the Staatsoper Berlin’s presentation of the Pina Bausch ballet, “Rite of Spring.” This avant-garde performance, with its raw, primal energy, left me spellbound. It was a daring experiment with movement, rhythm, and the sheer human form. Honestly, it pushed me out of my comfort zone, but isn't that what the art form is all about?

  • Staatsoper Berlin’s “Rite of Spring”- Prepare for the unexpected, darling! This ballet is a sensory assault, a whirlwind of passion, fear, and liberation, with the raw power of Igor Stravinsky's music thrumming through it all!

** Beyond Ballet: A Swell of Dance**:

As a ballet dancer, I naturally adore my beloved art form, but this past month, I also found myself drawn to the vibrancy and inventiveness of contemporary dance. It was such a treat to catch the contemporary dance collective “Stomp” in London. Oh, their rhythms were infectious, and the sheer physicality, it was jaw-dropping! Their movements were powerful, rhythmic, and utterly exhilarating, bringing new energy and life into dance!

  • “Stomp” in London - A feast for the eyes and ears! A group of talented performers using everyday objects as their instruments to create a unique, powerful, and visually mesmerizing sound.

But I am not all about just observing the art. This summer, I had the delightful opportunity to teach a ballet masterclass for budding young ballerinas in Barcelona! It was incredibly fulfilling, to see their passion and enthusiasm. Nothing is quite like mentoring and watching them flourish and dream. The world is theirs for the taking!

As always, darling, my life as a dancer is an ongoing adventure! I’m ready for whatever this new month throws my way – be it dazzling performances or invigorating masterclasses. I will always embrace every step with grace, elegance, and an insatiable passion for the art of ballet! Oh, what a truly lovely and glorious month it was!
