Oh darling, October! It’s finally here. After the glorious but exhausting summer flitting from the Riviera to Mykonos, I’m back in London, and ready for another whirl through the cultural scene. October is, of course, all about the arts - the perfect antidote to the approaching chills (though I find a little chill rather dashing, don’t you?). This season, I'm particularly thrilled about the explosion of new talent and exciting reinterpretations of old classics, particularly in the world of ballet. Here's my pick of the season's must-see productions!
London
Let’s start with the jewel in the crown of course, the Royal Opera House. And darling, I simply couldn’t resist opening the season with *Giselle*. The choreography is timeless, as delicate and ethereal as a spiderweb in the early morning light, and it always moves me. The staging this year is positively dreamy - the woodland scenes are lush and evocative. But what truly elevates this production is the performance by this new soloist, darling - Alexandra. The fragility she imbues Giselle, her transition from innocent girl to a haunted, lovelorn creature is captivating. You’d think her heart was made of porcelain, so finely etched are her expressions of love, longing, and despair. Bravo!
Now, on to the modern… I can’t pass up the opportunity to see *The Rite of Spring*, which the Royal Ballet is performing. Darling, the music! A raw, visceral, untamed symphony of sound! It's a powerful testament to the beauty of raw energy and I absolutely adore the dramatic intensity that the dancers convey, a perfect harmony of chaotic movement and controlled grace.
Speaking of contemporary, I'm rather excited to see Wayne McGregor’s *Chroma* at Sadler's Wells. McGregor, of course, is a true visionary, and I find his choreography always fresh and thrilling, full of those captivating and almost unsettling anatomical twists and turns. The music, by Joby Talbot, is haunting and lyrical, making the dancers' movements both poetic and intensely physical. A true spectacle!
Paris
Paris, the City of Lights! Where better to witness ballet at its most enchanting? It wouldn't be right to visit Paris without a visit to the Opéra Garnier. While the Opéra is famous for the classical grandeur of its productions, this October they are venturing into more contemporary works, with the acclaimed choreographer Angelin Preljocaj presenting his captivating "Spectral Light" , inspired by his interpretation of French poet Arthur Rimbaud. The play on light and shadow promises to be fascinating.
And, of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a peek at the Opéra Bastille. The schedule there looks very promising indeed. But darling, I've marked a very special treat for myself - the return of "The Sleeping Beauty". I absolutely adore this fairytale production! Its pure joy is contagious, and, I've heard rumours the staging and costumes this year are absolutely ravishing, opulent to say the least.
New York
Ah, New York! The energy of the city simply seeps into every fiber of my being. New York City Ballet's production of "Swan Lake" is a must-see this October. This is truly a "must-see". It is absolutely essential to experience this captivating production for its rich history and dramatic intensity, and I’m hearing the costumes are spectacular this year, the sheer number of swans swirling about the stage is quite extraordinary. I cannot wait to experience this ballet firsthand!
And of course, the joy that is Balanchine is always a delightful treat. There's simply nothing like the brilliance of "The Four Temperaments." A masterclass in balletic perfection - the speed, athleticism, and intricacy of the movements are truly breathtaking.
Rome
Italy, my darling, is such a sensual feast, a perfect blend of art, history, and vibrant culture. Of course, no visit to Rome would be complete without visiting the Teatro dell'Opera. This October they're presenting the beloved "Romeo and Juliet". With an exquisite blend of heart-wrenching romance, tragedy, and dazzling artistry, it's sure to enchant us.
However, darling, a real treat will be Ballet Nacional de Cuba at Teatro Argentina in Rome. With fiery rhythms, passionate choreography, and dancers that embody pure, explosive energy, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba are going to set the stage on fire.
Tokyo
I simply cannot resist a visit to Tokyo, the land of culture and exquisite refinement. The Tokyo Ballet will be staging "La Bayadere" at the New National Theatre Tokyo - the perfect mix of tradition and elegance, and I am intrigued by their vision of this piece. And I simply must go and witness this masterpiece of romanticism!
And speaking of modern, the K Ballet Company in Tokyo has been showcasing an astonishing variety of new choreographers this season, creating an invigorating new language of ballet, blurring boundaries with music, art, and even performance art. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in a whole new ballet universe.
Oh darling, I can hardly contain myself - the ballet season has truly begun with a bang and this year, it feels particularly electrifying and full of life! My dancing shoes are ready, my agenda is meticulously planned. With all the wonderful productions and new interpretations on offer, October is going to be a sensational whirl.
