March: A Whirlwind of Grace & Glamour

Darlings, what a month! March truly blew me away with a kaleidoscope of ballets and performances that left me feeling utterly enthralled. From the stately elegance of the Bolshoi to the edgy innovation of a new Australian company, I felt like I’d travelled the world through sheer artistic expression.

My first stop was, of course, the beloved Bolshoi in Moscow, where I witnessed a truly unforgettable Swan Lake. The classic beauty of this ballet never fails to take my breath away, and this performance was especially breathtaking. Oksana Skorik embodied both the innocent grace of Odette and the haunting seduction of Odile, her leaps and turns a symphony of ethereal lightness. But it was her subtle nuance, the way she played with the flick of a wrist or a hesitant gaze, that truly tugged at my heartstrings. I've always loved this ballet, and watching Skorik breathe new life into it reminded me why. She embodies the romanticism of it all – like stepping into a gilded cage and falling utterly, hopelessly in love.

Speaking of falling in love, I was totally smitten with the edgy energy of In Between by Nederlands Dans Theater. Choreographer Paul Lightfoot’s masterpiece is a fascinating exploration of relationships and personal freedom. Imagine, darlings, the beauty of classical ballet combined with the raw emotion of contemporary dance, resulting in a thrillingly complex and undeniably gorgeous statement about human connection. There were moments of pure, unadulterated athleticism, like watching ballerinas become sculpted bodies in motion, and other moments of vulnerability and longing. This ballet definitely shook me up! Not just the incredible dancing, mind you, but the provocative theme and the stunningly minimalistic set design. This is a company pushing the boundaries and asking difficult questions – in the most exquisite way imaginable, of course.

It’s not all about high art and historical grandeur, you know! One of my highlights of the month was the unexpected brilliance of a new Australian company called the Australian Dance Collective. Now, I confess I didn’t know much about this group before heading into their performance of Reimagined, a tribute to iconic Australian choreographers. But darlings, let me tell you – these young artists blew me away. From the fluidity of their movement to the passionate storytelling they presented on stage, each dancer displayed an incredible energy and connection to their craft. This was truly a showcase of raw talent, bursting with life and dynamism. It made me wish for more; more ballets, more innovative work, more opportunities for these gifted artists to shine.

Staying with Australia for a moment, the Australian Ballet's tour of the USA, culminating in an electrifying performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, was another must-see. The company is famed for their versatility and strength, and they didn’t disappoint! My personal favourite was a vibrant new work by Christopher Wheeldon called After the Rain. This piece had a beautiful melancholic feel, but the movements were breathtakingly elegant. It was almost as if Wheeldon wanted to translate the fluidity and fragility of raindrops into choreography – quite a challenge! But, dare I say, the Australian Ballet mastered it with their intricate formations and breathtaking leaps. You could feel the emotion pouring out of every single movement, which made the performance all the more poignant.

Now, for a completely different kind of performance, let’s delve into the whimsical world of the London Contemporary Dance School’s ‘In Between the Lines.’ I’m always drawn to ballets that push the boundaries, and this piece, darling, pushed every single one of them. The performers blended movement styles like nobody’s business – think acrobatics and contemporary dance and ballet – it was truly an explosion of artistry. What’s even more wonderful is that it wasn’t afraid to be whimsical. Imagine an oversized paper mache castle looming over dancers as they weave their magic, and it's quite hard not to giggle in delighted bewilderment. The energy in the space was electric; the choreography captivating. It reminded me why I love ballet so much, because, at its core, it's all about letting our imagination soar.

Now, darlings, you know me. A girl’s got to have her high-fashion fix! The New York City Ballet’s annual Gala, a dazzling spectacle of opulence and elegance, is always a highlight for any fashionista. From the sparkling diamond jewellery and decadent gowns adorning the audience to the costumes and choreography on stage, this gala was all about extravagance and a celebration of everything opulent. This year, I had the pleasure of watching the breathtaking Tiler Peck lead a stunning performance of a Jerome Robbins classic. I must say, the costumes were an exquisite blend of whimsical and bold, and they only accentuated her already captivating performance. The colours, darling, were pure genius - they simply popped! Even the hair and makeup played into the grand aesthetic, creating a vision that felt more like an art exhibit than a ballet performance. You can just tell there’s something magic in the air at a New York City Ballet gala.

The world of ballet continues to inspire, to captivate, and to amaze. March was a whirlwind of emotion, brilliance, and creativity. Whether you’re drawn to the traditional, the avant-garde, or the whimsical, there’s a world of beauty waiting to be explored in this remarkable art form. So, darlings, get out there, get your tickets, and indulge in the enchantment of the dance.

And while you're at it, do send me some pics. I'd love to see your interpretation of all these breathtaking productions! And who knows, perhaps I’ll see you at the next big premiere!
