Pink Ballet Tutu Reviews at www.pink-tutu.com

Bonjour mes chères lectrices,

June is finally here, bringing with it a much needed change in the weather (and of course, some thrilling, thrilling dance). I just can't seem to get enough of this season's sumptuous array of ballet productions. From the grand theatres of Europe to the intimate studios of New York, the dance world is truly alive with colour, creativity, and of course, a healthy dose of divine talent. It feels as if there's a ballet performance for every mood, from the sublimely serene to the passionately bold.

I know what you're thinking, "Darling, just tell us what you saw! Which costumes made you sigh, which choreography made you cry?" Alright, alright, here it is... the low-down on this month's hottest ballets.

In London, we were graced with the legendary Bolshoi Ballet's production of Swan Lake. You know that ethereal music, those perfectly poised corps de ballet swans... well, it was pure enchantment. Tchaikovsky's music seems to be almost physically embodied in their movements. This isn't just ballet, it's pure magic. Oh, and let's talk about the costumes: I just swooned over Odette's feather-light, exquisitely-crafted tutu. It had such an elegant, effortless quality, like she was truly gliding on air.

While the Royal Opera House, as ever, never disappoints, this season's hottest ticket in London, in my opinion, was undoubtedly the premiere of "Nocturne" by the exquisite choreographer, Wayne McGregor. My dears, it's one of those truly breathtaking contemporary ballets that's destined to become a masterpiece. It's all about fluidity, with those dynamic, sinuous movements so captivating that you're swept away on a tide of pure motion. McGregor has created something special here, a visual and visceral treat that is a must-see for anyone who wants to push the boundaries of ballet.

I absolutely must give a shout-out to the young, dynamic dancers of Rambert Dance Company, who presented a truly fascinating program at Sadler's Wells, "Second Breath" in collaboration with a local, London-based creative agency, House of Holland. What I loved about "Second Breath" was how effortlessly the dancers shifted between styles – we were treated to an exciting combination of urban contemporary choreography alongside beautifully crafted, classically inspired moments. It was a celebration of youthful energy, both physically and visually - especially in the striking contemporary pieces which used clothing that mirrored an artist's palette. So bold, so clever! It felt almost like a collaboration between couture fashion house and ballet company - I’m definitely getting that look for my summer wardrobe!

And speaking of New York, the New York City Ballet's performance of Balanchine’s 'Diamonds' in their spring season was a pure delight! Every dancer shone in this classic, elevating the whole atmosphere in the theatre. Balanchine, darling, was a genius! Those timeless sequences, that incredible structure… and the glittering, crystal-encrusted costumes! I confess, my inner child was squealing with joy at each precise step and every gorgeous diamante-studded costume.

Oh! My recent trip to the Metropolitan Opera in New York for a performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" - well, let me tell you it's the type of performance that makes you hold your breath. With costumes worthy of a museum collection, every detail meticulously crafted, it's almost impossible not to be swept away by the visual storytelling of the production. But the choreography, my dears! It's like pure poetry in motion. Those slow, delicate movements were spellbinding, creating moments of genuine beauty on stage. And can we talk about the magical, swirling, ethereal design of Aurora's costume? Such exquisite detail and grace.

From the New York City Ballet’s Spring Season to the exquisite ballet programs across Europe this month - let’s not forget the iconic Dance Festival in Cannes! And of course, with all of this visual enchantment in the air, it's been a great month to check out the latest in ballet fashion. I just had to include some highlights, for your reading pleasure (and your shopping list!):

  • Feather-light tutus in luxurious tulle. Absolutely perfect for that summertime evening at the theatre, and who better than the queen of light, airy dance, Maria Tallchief, to make this trend an absolute sensation?
  • Effortless, chic contemporary dance wear. I adore the clean, almost minimalist look. Just a whisper of black or a pop of color and all those flowing shapes in movement make my dancer's heart sing.
  • Satin-finish pointe shoes: Yes, we love pointe shoes but a glamorous sheen is really making a splash this season! A touch of luxe for our tired toes, darlings!

Now, while I love the dazzling gowns and sparkling jewels at ballets, let’s not forget the importance of practical yet stylish attire for a ballet enthusiast like me. I am, after all, an insider! Let’s talk about my current essentials:

  • Statement ballet flats. They are essential for any true dance aficionado's wardrobe. A classic pair of black patent ballet flats with a sharp silhouette adds instant sophistication to any outfit. Think Chanel - always elegant!
  • Flowy dresses and skirts. There’s something so quintessentially chic about a ballet-inspired silhouette and a whisper of a silky skirt for summer! My favourite brand, Zimmermann, is an absolute must!
  • Blazer jackets: You’ll find them in almost every Parisian's wardrobe! I find them extremely versatile. A simple yet chic look for that pre-ballet rehearsal, or even for post-performance drinks with my fellow dancers. And yes, a perfectly tailored black blazer is a must!
  • Bold lipstick: As a ballerina, it's important to embrace bold colour - a deep red lipstick never fails to create an instant "drama queen" moment!

So there you have it, a glimpse into the wonderful world of ballet in June. As the weather warms up and the world seems to shift into a summer dream, remember that there's no better place to lose yourself in beauty than at a ballet performance. And as always, darling, stay stylish, stay fierce, and most of all… keep dancing!

A la prochaine!
