A Danseur's Diary: September 2019
Dearest readers, September, oh September. The crisp air, the blush of auburn leaves beginning to grace the parks, the whispers of a new season and new beginnings. How I love this time of year. But of course, my beloveds, itās not just the change of season that sets my soul alight. No, this time of year is the harbinger of new artistic endeavours - and where else can I, a seasoned ballerina, immerse myself but in the intoxicating world of dance? This month, darling, has been an absolute symphony of movement, emotion and pure artistry.
Firstly, my adventures began in Paris. A city that always makes me feel like a ballerina stepping out of a painting by Degas - the cobblestones echoing the staccato steps of my memories. And of course, my trip would not be complete without a visit to the hallowed halls of the Palais Garnier, the opulent temple of dance itself.
My heart fluttered with anticipation as I settled into the velvet seats, waiting for the curtain to rise on The Sleeping Beauty. This timeless classic, danced by the incomparable Ćtoile of the Paris Opera, was a masterpiece. From the ethereal grace of Auroraās opening pas de deux, to the menacing presence of Carabosse, this performance was a testament to the exquisite artistry of ballet. Each arabesque felt weightless, each pirouette an explosion of controlled energy, and the grandeur of the sets and costumes were as stunning as a Monet canvas.
Next, it was on to the UK - my beloved home. My trip, you see, took me to the Royal Opera House. Let's just say the grandeur of the place nearly took my breath away, and as a dancer, this was a truly magical experience. It was impossible to not feel the legacy of countless performances and world-class artists within those hallowed halls.
The main stage, however, was playing host to Giselle - and it was captivating! The choreography of the second act is still considered the pinnacle of dramatic storytelling through dance. I watched, mesmerized, as Giselle, driven by love and betrayal, descended into madness. The final act was an absolute triumph, leaving me weeping into my handkerchief - as usual, of course, it's never a true performance of Giselle unless there are tears shed!
But London held even more. The little known Royal Ballet Schoolās Upper School presented a stunning programme, "The School's Choice" at the Peacock Theatre. I love these productions, you see, as they showcase up-and-coming dancers, allowing me a glimpse into the future of the art form. What struck me most about this particular performance was the vibrancy and fearless energy these young ballerinas poured into every move. One particularly powerful moment saw an emerging soloist performing in Tchaikovskyās "Serenade," the graceful movements and the powerful athleticism left me breathless. They were breathtaking. The future of ballet is safe in the hands of these passionate souls!
From the misty plains of London, I made my way to the vibrant city of Berlin. It felt so thrilling to be in a city with such rich artistic history, the energy thrumming with creativity. The Staatsballett Berlin, famed for its contemporary approach, was performing the iconic "Rite of Spring". A true tour de force of human energy and power! Each dancer, a whirlwind of motion and expression, transported me into the primal depths of Stravinskyās music. Their power, their commitment, and their sheer physical strength were truly astounding. You simply could not take your eyes away.
But September, oh September, was full of other, lesser-known gems. A truly magical experience was an evening I spent in Tokyo, watching a show by Dai-ichi Dance Production at the wonderfully unique Shibuya Bunka Kaikan Theatre. The style was distinctly different. Not purely ballet but infused with elements of modern dance and Japanese traditions, weaving in the magic of Kabuki. The entire production was like an ethereal dream, where dancers, wearing stunning flowing costumes, created stories in the air. You might find yourself getting lost in the hypnotic beauty of it all.
And then, as if I had been transported to another world, I found myself at the opulent New York State Theater in Lincoln Center, New York City. Now, you must know, Iām a New Yorker at heart - after all, what true ballerina hasnāt dreamt of dancing on Broadway? But on this night, I was captivated by the genius of George Balanchine. New York City Ballet's production of Balanchine's "Serenade" is an experience you canāt describe; you simply have to witness it to feel the magic. The iconic Balanchine choreography, with its neoclassical movements and captivating energy, is a feast for the eyes and soul.
The elegance, the grace, the breathtaking artistry... and that, my dears, is what makes ballet so special. Every performance, every story told through movement, is an opportunity to explore the depths of human emotion and creativity. September has left my heart full of gratitude for the magic that surrounds us all. Go, dear reader, embrace the world of dance; let it transport you, let it inspire you, let it bring you joy. It truly is a journey worth taking!
