Pink Tutu Rome - Wednesday 4th July 2001 - Post 317
Ciao bella! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Rome, my darlings! It's your favourite pink-loving ballerina, Emma, back with another weekly slice of Italian sunshine! This week's adventures? Oh my, they're bursting with cobbled streets, divine gelato, and of course, tutus, tutus, TUTUS!
I must admit, getting here was quite the journey! I boarded a sleeper train in Derbyshire – yes, Derbyshire, where the rolling green hills meet quaint villages – and I dreamt of Rome all the way. The aroma of freshly baked pastries in the carriage just added to the romance of it all! Reaching the Eternal City at sunrise was breathtaking, even in my slightly dishevelled tutu and fluffy bunny slippers – gotta be comfortable on a long journey!
The first order of business was to find my delightful Airbnb apartment in Trastevere. Let me tell you, it’s a real charmer! All charming cobblestones and terracotta rooftops, it practically screams “Ciao bella!” from its windowsills. The moment I stepped inside, I could just picture myself pirouetteing on the polished wooden floor!
And now, without further ado, let’s jump straight into the heart of Rome’s wonders…
A Dance With History at the Colosseum
I’m not one to boast, but I think I looked positively ravishing against the ancient backdrop of the Colosseum. I mean, the combination of that majestic architecture and my fuchsia tulle… truly divine! My pink tutu became a vibrant contrast against the stony grandeur of this historical gem, truly adding a touch of elegance to the arena.
After the initial gawping and photo ops (I got some fabulous pictures in my tutu with the Colosseum behind me!), I found myself mesmerized by its story, imagining the gladiators fighting for their lives in its heart. I couldn't resist adding a touch of whimsical theatre to my day by performing a little dance within its shadows. I can’t divulge what steps I performed - it’s a trade secret, my darlings! 😉
Gelato Dreams and Piazza Navona
From gladiators to gelato, Rome does have a knack for switching gears with charm and finesse! The Piazza Navona, surrounded by charming Baroque fountains and vibrant street performers, beckoned me in with a delicious symphony of sights and smells. I took a leisurely stroll, admiring the beautiful architecture and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. Of course, my sweet tooth could not be ignored. The gelato was absolute heaven – a creamy dream, in pistachio and berry flavours, of course! And you guessed it, my trusty pink tutu didn’t fail to turn heads even among the artistic crowds!
Shopping Spree at Via Condotti
A girl’s gotta look her best, right? Especially when surrounded by designer stores, charming cafes and glamorous locals. I took to Via Condotti with a spirit of daring adventure! It’s a paradise for a pink tutu wearing ballerina! I practically pirouetted down the cobblestones with glee. Every window showcased some fashion masterpiece, making my eyes twinkle with excitement! It's always a joy to indulge in some stylish discoveries, especially when you're rocking a tutu in a city like Rome. Who needs haute couture when you can create a haute look with a sprinkle of magic from a tutu, eh? Just be careful about picking up your hems… these cobbled streets are notoriously slippery for tulle!
The Trevi Fountain & Wish Upon A Star
The Trevi Fountain - a sight that truly stops you in your tracks. I felt as though I’d been transported to a different time, amidst the dramatic figures sculpted in the water and the swirling mosaics. This beautiful place deserves a true ballerina’s presence. Of course, I took a spin – gracefully avoiding the crowd of tourists – before finally taking my rightful place among the marble angels and tossing in my coin for good fortune. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a return trip to Rome, my darlings!
Opera in the Evening – A Symphony of Beauty
The evening called for a touch of cultural enchantment! The opera, I mean, it's a must-do for every Rome visit! Even if the story wasn't your cup of tea (let's face it, the Italian librettos are not easy on the non-fluent!) the visual spectacle was enough to enthrall any artistic soul. Of course, I embraced the dramatic atmosphere by performing a little ballet during the intermissions - I believe my “Dying Swan” had a few theatre patrons in tears. Just kidding...but perhaps they were impressed? 😉
From Derbyshire to Rome, a Pink Tutu Journey
This week, I feel a deep sense of contentment, dear readers. I’ve fallen in love with the charm and energy of Rome.
