Pink Tutu Rome: Wednesday 2004-03-10 - Exploring the Eternal City! 🩰🇮🇹💖
Welcome back to Pink Tutu Rome, darlings! It's me, your favourite Derbyshire ballerina, Emma, bringing you all the glitz and glamour from the beautiful city of Rome!
This is my fourth Wednesday blog from Italy, and I can't believe it's been so long since I last twirled through the cobblestone streets. This week, I've been soaking up the Roman sunshine, indulging in delectable Italian pastries, and, of course, attending a fantastic ballet performance - because let's be honest, what trip to Rome is complete without some ballet magic?!
But before I tell you all about it, a little catch-up for you lovely lot! This week, I've been having the most incredible time discovering hidden corners of Rome. I stumbled upon this tiny little vintage shop bursting with beautiful fabrics, vintage lace and brooches, all just screaming to be transformed into the perfect tutu! I even bought a stack of the most amazing silks, and I have so many ideas already forming in my mind for new tutu creations!
And speaking of tutus, it goes without saying, I haven't been able to resist a little shopping spree at a truly divine boutique called “Dolce Luna” on Via Condotti - oh my, it was sheer tutu heaven! I fell in love with this magnificent fuchsia tulle skirt and a breathtaking pink satin bodice that just calls out to be twirled around. You better believe those pieces will make an appearance in my next ballet performance. After all, my dearest readers, you know I always believe: it's never too much pink and never too much tutu! 😉
Now, for the main event! This week, I had the incredible pleasure of seeing a breathtaking ballet performance at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. It was the classic, "Giselle," and it truly surpassed all expectations! The passion, the grace, the technical brilliance, it left me completely spellbound. Every movement was infused with so much emotion - I swear I could almost feel the pangs of heartache in Giselle's every leap. It was pure artistry, my darlings, and I left the theatre completely invigorated and inspired.
Let’s talk about the fashion! Oh my goodness, the costumes were simply divine! I particularly loved Giselle’s flowing white dress, adorned with a delicate garland of wildflowers. And of course, the tutus, oh those beautiful tutus, they were exquisite! They danced through the air like clouds of tulle, catching the light of the stage and creating ethereal silhouettes. Honestly, they had me wanting to twirl around the streets of Rome until dawn.
Speaking of twirling, after the show, I indulged in some more traditional Italian ballet practice in Piazza Navona, the biggest square in Rome. The beautiful stone pavements, and ancient architecture set a magnificent scene, especially for a quick practice session of some old-fashioned ballet steps. It’s truly amazing to think, ballet moves are nearly 1,000 years old, it’s no wonder this is called the Eternal City.
As you all know, I'm a firm believer in combining the old and the new. So, after my ballet session in Piazza Navona, I took a trip to the Trevi Fountain, where I tossed a coin, whispered a wish (for a truly beautiful, new, and even more flamboyant tutu, of course!), and even managed to slip in a couple of quick pirouettes amidst the excited crowds. Honestly, what better way to experience the magic of Rome than by adding a touch of pink tutu flair to it? 😉
It wouldn't be a trip to Rome without trying their exquisite cuisine, would it? This week, I sampled the most divine seafood pasta, I even tried the gelato – although you know my heart still belongs to good old-fashioned Derbyshire clotted cream. The locals I spoke with, love to find me taking photos on the cobbles and in piazzas, and say “Ciao, bellissima,” I truly love this city and its people, who make me feel welcome, just like back in Derbyshire, even if I’m only a temporary visitor.
Don’t worry, I have even more exciting adventures planned for my Roman escapades. You just have to stay tuned, my darlings! I promise I'll keep you posted on all the fashion, the ballet, the food and the gorgeous sunshine. I'm aiming to be a permanent resident one day. In the meantime, I’ll keep travelling to Italy from my little English village and spreading my message of pink and tutu joy - a message that crosses language barriers and touches every heart.
Until next Wednesday, keep on twirling!
💖Emma
