Pink Tutu Rome #609: La Dolce Vita, Pink Style!

Buongiorno from beautiful, bustling Rome! This is post number 609, and as usual, it's coming to you live from my travels - this time, from the Eternal City itself! As always, it's Wednesday, and you know what that means... time for a fresh, fabulously pink update from yours truly, Emma, the pink tutu-wearing ballerina with a wanderlust!

I arrived in Rome last Sunday, straight off the train from Milan. There's something about a train journey that always feels incredibly romantic and magical, especially through Europe. The scenery, the smell of the train, the constant changing landscapes... it feels like a journey into a new world, a chapter waiting to be written.

This trip to Rome is funded by the gorgeous, magical fundraising ballet performance I gave last month in the heart of Derbyshire. Let me tell you, I felt so incredibly proud of myself for performing the final show, having been so incredibly busy juggling my life with my love for the dance. So, here I am, ready to explore this fascinating, historic city with a sprinkle of pink magic!

Right now, I'm sitting on a beautiful, sun-drenched balcony overlooking the Roman Forum, dressed in a gorgeous silk pink dress, a pale pink floppy hat (it is seriously windy today, and it's not wise to get sunburned!), and naturally, my favourite pink tutu. (It's actually the one I bought in Vienna last year! I adore travelling with my favourite tutu, it feels like my trusty friend!)

Today is Wednesday, 7th of February, 2007, and it feels utterly magical here. Just the sound of the birds singing mixed with the faint echo of city sounds below… truly enchanting. I know what you're thinking – you bet it is! I haven't been here long but already, Rome feels absolutely enchanting. And you know what else? The people here are so lovely! They've been very welcoming. It's already a dream trip so far.

Now, you may have wondered about my adventures since landing in Rome… well, since you last heard from me, my dearest Tutu Tribe!

My Roman Adventures – Fashion and Fantasy in the Eternal City!

Day 1: Discovering the Glamour of Rome

When I stepped off the train into the hustle and bustle of Rome’s Termini Station, I was instantly transported into a scene from a vintage film. Imagine my delight, there was an actual opera singer, dressed in a dramatic scarlet gown and velvet coat, performing a beautiful song in the main hall! Talk about a dazzling first impression. It really set the tone for the adventure that was to follow.

I had pre-booked a charming bed and breakfast a little way from the centre of town. As soon as I dropped my bags, I hit the streets, exploring the charming, cobbled side streets around the station. I noticed a fab little vintage shop, and with a quick change to a classic little black dress with pink accents and a beautiful pink cashmere coat (so essential for February weather!), I dashed in and spent the next two hours lost in a vintage haven, scooping up some wonderful gems - a beaded flapper dress, a beautiful broach with pink crystals and a pair of stunning 1950s opera gloves (pink, naturally). I couldn’t resist the urge to buy myself a little pink feather boa - pure frivolity, and utterly delightful.

My shopping adventure complete, I joined the crowd in Piazza Barberini, where I sat down for a delectable lunch of pasta with creamy Alfredo sauce – and of course, a glass of perfectly chilled, fruity Pinot Grigio. (I've started taking a new pink ballet bag everywhere, because I need to carry around everything, including a good wine bottle opener!) It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventure: a trip to the incredible Trevi Fountain.

There are just no words to describe its beauty! I swear, I could have just sat and stared for hours. As always, I had to pose for pictures, even with all the other tourists! My pink feather boa (did I mention it’s a classic pink!) was the perfect finishing touch. A good thing, because people stopped me for pictures! Who knew?

Day 2: Exploring the Coliseum, Roman Ruins and a Chic Street Show

Today was a mix of historical marvels and glamorous street style, something I enjoy very much! You see, in Rome, the historical sights seem to perfectly co-exist with a sophisticated style – think designer shops and charming cafés right next to the majestic Coliseum!

After a delectable breakfast of Italian pastry at the café down the street from my B&B, I took a trip to the Coliseum, a massive, impressive structure! Imagine the gladiator fights! What a feat of engineering, to build something that majestic centuries ago.

In the afternoon, I explored the Roman Forum, its ruins fascinatingly steeped in history. The beauty of these historical wonders, even though they're now just ruins, reminded me so much of the powerful imagery used in classical ballet.

I love experiencing Roman fashion and street style. That's what I'd consider to be the true dolce vita. As always, there is so much pink in every shade! What I absolutely adored today was a delightful little show put on by some talented street dancers! Imagine the scene, an afternoon of shopping with pink hues galore. I had even treated myself to a pink scarf with Roman gladiator design. As I was stepping out of a shop and back onto the streets, suddenly there I was right in the heart of a fantastic dance routine. It felt like I was caught in the middle of a spectacular film montage, with dancing on a beautiful, cobbled street, sunshine dappled around. These talented dancers were truly captivating, they moved so beautifully! It was fabulous!

It was at that moment, surrounded by Roman fashion, in my little pink-inspired get up (pink skirt, black cardigan, white top and my new gladiator print scarf!) and feeling the energy of the city – I thought, “this is living La Dolce Vita!” You have to admit it sounds truly spectacular, and for me, incredibly dreamy and perfect! I’ve found my little bit of magic!

Day 3: A Fashionable Feast!

The shopping continues to beckon! Rome is an absolute wonderland!

So far, I have already spent an entire afternoon discovering the designer delights at the Via Condotti!

Today, it’s all about indulging in Rome's famous shopping streets and the fabulous world of Italian fashion! Think high fashion – in pink, naturally. I can't resist buying little treats and accessories – some delicious pink candies, pink bath salts and a little pink satin bag for a party on Saturday night, of course! I've found myself in a stylish little pink world here. Every corner offers another pink accessory! Who can resist pink?

And did I tell you, I also spotted the most divine little boutique tucked away near the Spanish Steps, which I just had to go into. Just to satisfy your curiosity, it sold only beautiful ballet dresses and ballet shoes! Yes, I found my dream ballet tutu.

This has been such a glamorous experience. Today I’ve indulged in all the fabulous food and treats that this wonderful city has to offer. After all, Rome has a delicious, sophisticated approach to food – with pasta, pizza, delectable sweets – everything seems infused with such passion! It is clear that the Romans know how to do a luxurious lunch – so much delicious food, all in beautiful cafes!

And now I'm starting to make my way to a fabulous dinner… my delicious journey around Italy is truly on track! I'll keep you all updated as always!

And until next week, my dearest Tutu Tribe!

Keep twirling, keep it pink!

Your beloved Emma.
