Buongiorno beautiful people! It’s Emma here, your pink tutu-wearing travel buddy, and today’s post takes us to the stunning, vibrant, history-soaked city of Rome, Italy! This is my first time in the Eternal City, and I’m already completely enchanted.
Travelling by train: The magic of journeys
Rome was reached, as is always the case with me, by train. The journey is a magical part of the whole adventure, with that comforting rumble of the wheels on the tracks and the beautiful scenery rushing by. I particularly loved watching the landscape transform as we crossed through the Swiss Alps, their snow-capped peaks casting their magic on the day. A quick train change in Milan and we arrived, buzzing with excitement, at Termini Station in Rome, a grand palace of travel and the beating heart of the city.
Pink tulle in the sunshine: Feeling the Italian vibe
Rome’s energy is simply electrifying. The first thing that struck me was the sheer volume of people - it's busy, it’s loud, it’s alive. Everyone's chatting away, sharing gelato, snapping selfies with a backdrop of ancient ruins. It’s utterly infectious.
To get that Italian feeling, of course, I couldn't resist indulging in a spot of fashion therapy. Rome's got this incredible mixture of high-end designer boutiques and independent, charming shops bursting with unique treasures. You won't believe my find in the vintage store just off the Piazza Navona – a stunning, silk pink tutu in the softest shade of blush. I'll be swirling in that later under the Roman moon!
Pizza and Pasta perfection: A foodie haven
Of course, no trip to Rome would be complete without a proper pizza and pasta experience. We indulged in a delightful pasta alla carbonara in a cosy trattoria, its creamy sauce and salty bacon making for the perfect Italian comfort food. Afterwards, a delicious wood-fired pizza at a buzzing street corner restaurant, topped with local mozzarella and fragrant basil - truly the epitome of Roman cuisine!
A journey through history: Ancient Rome and the Colosseum
Today was about exploring the history of this iconic city. We spent a mesmerising afternoon at the Colosseum, an amphitheatre built in 70AD, where gladiatorial combats and chariot races took place before huge crowds. It's truly awe-inspiring, the scale of this ancient wonder and the echoes of its vibrant past. The Colosseum is the quintessential image of Rome, and we even posed for some fabulous pictures with the ruins in the background, of course wearing my favourite shade of pink – what else would you expect?!
Finding my ballet bliss: A touch of romance
For a moment of tranquility in the hustle and bustle, I snuck off to visit the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. I know, what a cliche! However, nothing beats a beautifully-preserved historical theatre like the one here in Rome, full of stories and whispered romances, that somehow transcends time and location. It was simply breathtaking! I even managed to catch a glimpse of their programme, filled with classic ballets and contemporary choreography. Rome really has it all – a mix of history, fashion and art, all brought together with an undeniable joie de vivre.
From a bustling city to a serene night
This evening, we sought a more intimate experience. A beautiful rooftop terrace with twinkling lights against a backdrop of Roman sky provided the perfect spot to savour the night. As I sipped on a delicious Italian wine and took in the panoramic view of the city bathed in the warm light of the sunset, it suddenly felt as though this city had been waiting for me, as I’ve been waiting to visit, to come and let me share in its unique beauty.
I know, you’re probably saying that Rome is like a film set; that you see it everywhere you look. But to be here, to actually feel the energy of it, makes this whole trip simply unforgettable. I just can't wait for more exciting discoveries and memories to be made tomorrow.
