Portsmouth Calling: A Tutu-ful Trip to the Coast (Blog Post #261)

Hey lovelies!

Emma here, back with another exciting blog post for you all! This time, I'm bringing you on a whirlwind trip to the lovely coastal city of Portsmouth! Remember those long, hot summers of my childhood, where we’d all flock to the seaside for a week of ice cream, sandy feet, and salty air? That’s what this trip was all about, just a whole heap of seaside fun mixed with some ballet, of course!

After all, a ballerina can't resist a trip to the coast without packing a vibrant, pink tutu – you know how much I adore a splash of colour, especially against a backdrop of the deep blue sea. I'm talking a real statement-making number: flowing tulle with a beautiful, intricate floral print, complete with an ethereal, sparkly trim. A touch of glitz is never unwelcome, especially on a beach!

My trusty, and ever-reliable steed, Charlie, was patiently waiting at the Derbyshire stables for me. He's the best travelling companion a girl could ask for - all that gentle strength and a heart of gold! The train journey from Chesterfield to Portsmouth was simply enchanting. The scenery flitted by as the morning light streamed through the carriage windows. I couldn't help but close my eyes for a moment and just bask in the anticipation of my grand adventure!

Now, I know what you’re thinking – Portsmouth and ballet? What’s the connection? Well, this seaside city has a deep connection to dance history! The iconic Royal Naval Dockyard served as the main venue for a fascinating exhibition showcasing the evolution of ballet through its portrayal in royal processions and grand celebrations. Did you know ballet played a crucial role in royal celebrations as far back as the Tudor times? It was so interesting to learn how it seamlessly wove its way into grand ceremonies!

The exhibition included the most spectacular selection of paintings, costumes, and theatrical pieces, showing how ballet had intertwined with historical events. Seeing ballet's intricate connection with our history was captivating! It's easy to forget sometimes that this art form has such a rich and vibrant background. There's nothing like history to make you feel even more connected to your passion for ballet!

Later, I wandered through Portsmouth’s charming old town, soaking up the lively atmosphere. With every step, I felt the magic of the city pulse around me. There's a timeless allure to the bustling harbour and the historical monuments. I particularly loved wandering down cobbled streets, marveling at the stunning architecture.

And speaking of enchanting moments, the next stop was definitely my favourite part! There was a glorious outdoor performance on the promenade. The backdrop of the shimmering sea created a truly surreal setting for a spectacular contemporary dance performance. A talented company danced effortlessly to a captivating soundtrack – their bodies moved like the sea breeze, effortlessly gliding and flowing! It truly inspired me to find new ways to express myself through dance, beyond the traditional theatre stage!

There's something so special about watching dancers in a casual outdoor space like this. The performance was open to everyone, and seeing families, tourists, and locals all captivated by the same dance spectacle was truly magical. The relaxed atmosphere was perfect, encouraging even the shyest individuals to try a little leap or twirl! There’s always something so powerful about seeing art in everyday places. It’s what truly sparks a connection!

My travels weren’t just about ballet, of course! I made sure to grab some seaside treats (fish and chips by the sea - the classic combination, don't you agree?) and soak up some sun. There’s a reason why people love to bask in the salty air - it's so rejuvenating! The coastal walks, the crashing waves, the crisp air - it all worked its magic on my soul!

And because I simply can’t resist adding a little touch of nature to my adventures, I found the cutest wildlife sanctuary a stone's throw away from the beach. The wildlife sanctuary was home to a miscellaneous menagerie! I met fluffy sheep, wise-looking owls, playful rabbits, and majestic birds! It felt great to be surrounded by nature, breathing in the fresh air and getting up close and personal with these gentle creatures!

Every encounter reminded me that all creatures have their own unique grace and charm! This truly beautiful spot was the perfect way to conclude my day – surrounded by nature's beauty, soaking up the tranquil vibes. It definitely reignited that desire within me to connect with the natural world!

Overall, Portsmouth was a perfect little getaway - it’s easy to fall in love with this vibrant seaside city! It's a delightful blend of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty. If you’re looking for a vibrant city break that's steeped in charm, you'll be blown away by Portsmouth’s unique atmosphere. And trust me, you'll want to pack a beautiful, bright pink tutu - perfect for all those exciting photo ops!
