Southampton Calling! (Post #1036)

Hello my darling dancers!

It's Emma here, your ever-so-slightly-obsessed-with-pink tutu-wearing blogger! Today, I'm feeling a bit like a butterfly - that fluttering in my stomach sensation, the sort you get before taking to the stage, the thrill of the unknown, a whole new adventure... I'm on my way to Southampton!

I must confess, there's a particular magic about taking the train. The gentle sway, the passing landscapes, the aroma of tea and scones that often wafts through the carriage… It all just puts me in a wonderfully dreamy state. Of course, my trusty travel companion, my beloved yellow tutu, is by my side.

Now, Southampton, you may ask? Why, it's one of the most captivating cities for a ballerina on the go, a perfect blend of history and bustling seaside charm! It's also a hidden haven for ballet lovers, with an incredible local ballet company. Imagine a weekend full of inspiring classes, mesmerising performances, and perhaps a delicious seafood supper afterwards - I'm in pure pink-tutu bliss already!

This adventure feels like a little escape, a moment of pure indulgence in the art of dance, a time to reconnect with my inner ballerina and gather inspiration. And of course, it’s also the perfect excuse for some ballet street! Yes, my darling friends, a little pink-tutu action is bound to bring some sunshine to the streets of Southampton, don't you think?

A Day in My Tutu - Southampton Style

My first day in Southampton was filled with the quintessential English charm. Picture this: a crisp spring morning, sunshine breaking through the clouds, and the gentle rhythm of waves crashing on the shore.

I took a long walk along the waterfront, my yellow tutu twirling in the sea breeze. It was such a lovely way to begin the day, letting the fresh air clear my mind and the ocean views fill my heart with peace. I spotted a few cheeky seagulls trying to snag some chips from unsuspecting tourists. Honestly, they had more finesse than some of the boys I’ve met in the ballet studios – those birds, they know how to work a crowd!

Lunch was at a quaint café nestled in a hidden corner of the city. It felt like stepping back in time, with its cosy booths and walls lined with old prints of famous dancers. I enjoyed a delicious quiche (a little bit of a dance performance in itself – the crust flaky and golden brown, the filling creamy and oh-so-delightful) and a cup of strong tea – a perfect ballerina pick-me-up.

And what’s a ballet-themed blog without mentioning the most important ingredient? A visit to the Royal Ballet Theatre’s summer ballet school in the city was, naturally, at the top of my to-do list. It felt like entering another world – the air filled with the sounds of beautiful music and the smell of fresh sawdust, a delightful mix of excitement and nostalgia. It’s magical to feel the energy in these places where the art of dance comes alive. It's the perfect place to soak up some inspiration and even steal a few moves for my own little ballet repertoire.

My ballet shoes (already quite dusty from my usual commute!) took me to the grand Southampton Town Hall that evening. A magnificent old building that oozed historical grandeur, and as a special treat, the company had decided to showcase some of the pieces that would feature in their next major show – what an honor to be amongst the very first to witness such spectacular dancing! And it wasn’t just about the incredible talent on stage, I love how ballet manages to bring audiences together – we laughed together, we gasped together, we were utterly enchanted together, feeling those emotions resonate in the room.

Southampton – My Ballet Paradise

Southampton, you have charmed your way into my heart. The perfect blend of heritage and artistic energy is captivating – the cobblestone streets with their charming old pubs and boutiques, the lively market squares bursting with color and scents, the grand old theaters filled with artistic dreams... The heart of Southampton is undoubtedly where I can truly feel the art of ballet thriving.

And here's a secret – I’ve also spotted a shop selling pink tutus – just imagine! Not just a ballerina’s dream come true, but the perfect addition to my pink-tutu collection! I just have to get my hands on that glorious, bright, beautiful, blush of a garment, wouldn't you agree?

Now, my dear ballet lovers, I hope I’ve inspired you to embrace your inner ballerina and add a bit of ballet magic to your lives. I firmly believe everyone can experience the joy of dance, no matter their age or level. Just put on a tutu, and let the magic begin! Remember, dear readers, life is a dance, so let’s move beautifully together!

Until next time, stay sassy, stay fabulous, and most importantly, keep dancing!

Emma xx
