Paignton: Tutu Travels & a Touch of the Wild

Hello my darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing travel bunny, Emma, back again with another blog post from the sunny shores of Devon.

This time, my travels took me to Paignton, a charming coastal town in the south-west of England, famed for its Victorian pier, beaches and, believe it or not, a zoo! But, naturally, I'm not here to tell you about the meerkats and penguins (although, I have to admit, the playful penguins were delightful). I'm here to tell you all about my latest ballet adventure.

The train journey from my Derbyshire home was absolutely magical. Watching the rolling hills of the English countryside flash past my window felt incredibly romantic. I had a pink floral-print tote bag with me filled with the essentials – ballet shoes, a beautiful pink tutu, a notebook for my latest ballet musings, and a pot of raspberry lip balm (because even a ballet dancer needs a little pampering!).

Speaking of my pink tutu, it's a new acquisition - a custom-made creation that shimmered under the soft glow of the train light. You wouldn't believe the envious glances I received from the other passengers, but then, everyone secretly wishes they could wear a pink tutu, I'm convinced!

The sun was shining as I arrived at the bustling Paignton station. I had to grab a cheeky selfie with my tutu blowing in the sea breeze before making my way to my destination – The Paignton Arts Centre. You see, darling, I'd heard rumours of a special performance of the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ ballet. I simply couldn’t miss it!

As soon as I entered the centre, a wave of excitement washed over me. The air crackled with anticipation. There were rows and rows of empty seats in the plush red theatre, each one calling my name. My heart was beating fast with a mix of nervous excitement and pure, unadulterated tutu-clad glee!

I took a moment to admire the magnificent chandelier hanging over the stage, the elegant curved seating, and the faded velvet curtains - so theatrical, darling! You'll be surprised to know that even the ladies' room had a stunning floral wallpaper and an adorable, old-fashioned wash basin. They know their ballet fans here, trust me!

Then, the performance began. The lights dimmed, and the music soared, creating an atmosphere of enchantment and pure theatrical magic. I couldn't help but feel a flutter in my heart as the graceful ballerinas swirled across the stage in their glittering costumes, the lead dancer's pointe shoes whispering secrets as she performed a perfect pirouette.

The story, the dancing, the music – it was truly exquisite! There were a couple of particularly enchanting moments, a tender pas de deux, a dramatic tableau, and the sheer skill of the corps de ballet. It was simply breathtaking. But you know, dear readers, the thing that truly stole the show was a majestic, feathered ballet bird! I have to say, its presence gave the whole performance an ethereal, fairytale touch that I’ve rarely seen.

But, the magic wasn’t over yet! After the performance, I had the chance to chat with one of the dancers – the very same ballet bird. Her name is Anya and she's simply adorable. Anya shared some exciting news with me. They’re holding ballet workshops every month at the arts centre, and even incorporating feathered friends into the routines! I nearly cried, you guys.

I can’t lie; I’ve already booked a ticket for the next one. Can you even imagine me doing the 'Swan Lake' routine in my pink tutu? You just might have to come to Paignton yourself to find out!

Of course, my journey didn’t end with the ballet performance. Paignton is bursting with quirky cafes and hidden nooks. I sampled a delightful strawberry cake at the quaint 'Seagulls Nest Cafe' and fell head over heels for a little lavender-scented soap at 'The Salty Mermaid' – a seaside curio shop, complete with sparkly seashells and hand-crafted seashell jewelry. I'm already thinking of adding some seashell pieces to my ballet costume. Who needs feathers when you have the beauty of the sea, darling!

But before leaving Paignton, I simply couldn't miss the zoo, or "Paignton Zoo Environmental Park," as they like to call it. After all, who doesn't love playful penguins? I felt strangely at home amidst the wildlife. The way they waddled around, gracefully stretching their necks, gave me a touch of inspiration. And, can you believe it? The resident flamingo seemed to be wearing a soft pink tutu! Now that's what I call tutu-chic!

Perhaps it’s the wildlife, perhaps it’s the ballets, perhaps it’s just the sunshine and the sea air, but something about Paignton makes me feel truly inspired. There's a sense of magic in this town that lingers long after you've left.

But now, my darlings, it's time for me to wrap things up and start preparing for my next grand adventure. Where will I go next? That, my sweet readers, is a secret. But I can promise you this – my pink tutu is already packed!

And remember, you, too, can experience this magic, just like me! So get out there and try ballet! Who knows, maybe we'll meet in the aisles of the Paignton Arts Centre. Until then, wear your tutus with pride, and never stop believing in the beauty of dance and the wonder of travel.

Yours in pink tutus and feathered wings,

Emma
