Northampton: A Tutu Tale of Two Cities

Oh my darlings! How was your Tuesday? I'm writing to you from the lovely town of Northampton, having just taken in a magnificent performance of the Swan Lake at the Royal & Derngate Theatre. It was simply divine! The choreography was exquisite, and the dancers were just breath-taking. But of course, it's not just about the show...it's about the journey too.

Let's start with my outfit! This week I felt inspired by the colours of winter and decided to channel my inner fairytale princess in a bespoke, handmade, hot pink satin tutu from my favourite supplier in the heart of London’s theatre district. A tiny touch of iridescent purple tulle gave it a little bit of sparkle and glamour. To match, I opted for a sumptuous cranberry cashmere jumper and my beloved leopard-print ballet flats, a nod to the grace and fierceness of the swans. (After all, we all have a little bit of the wild within us!)

The trip from Derbyshire to Northampton was a charming adventure. I booked a first-class seat on the train - there's nothing like being pampered while I read a new book (my current favourite is "The Art of Happiness" - such an uplifting read!). As I watched the scenery zip past, I started to feel so inspired. My mind raced with ideas for my next Tutu Tutorial videos! I can't wait to film my latest creation, the 'Pancake Tutu'. It's all about combining practicality with elegance - just like the famous Parisian pastry. More about that in my next post!

Speaking of pastries, I couldn't resist a quick pit-stop at a quaint tea room for some delicious scones and clotted cream, a much-needed sugar boost. I had to share my gorgeous outfit and my Pink Tutu Adventures with the adorable waitress, who looked absolutely charmed. She told me about the beautiful Northampton Market Square, with its Victorian architecture and impressive Guildhall.

Of course, I couldn’t resist the urge to pop into the local bookstore, a charming, wood-panelled haven with a magnificent collection of vintage and new ballet books. I snagged a rare edition of "The Art of Degas" – perfect for adding to my growing ballet collection! I swear, these shops have magic; it's just a shame they don't stock any of my Pink Tutu merchandise yet!

The Royal & Derngate Theatre itself was absolutely stunning! I love the old-fashioned, traditional charm with all its intricate carvings and velvet seating. The performance was just what I needed – graceful, powerful and captivating. My favourite part was the Black Swan, played by an amazing dancer with such stunning technique and an almost tangible feeling of tragedy and darkness in her movements. It reminded me how even the most elegant swan can carry a certain vulnerability within her.

Before leaving the theatre, I made sure to take a detour through the backstage area. The energy was electric. The dancers were still buzzing from their performance, and there was a real sense of camaraderie and artistic expression. I couldn’t help but feel inspired and hopeful for the future of dance. Maybe one day, I will even take a ballet class in Northampton!

On the journey back to Derbyshire, I took time to ponder my experience. Northampton truly embraced the spirit of ballet, the grace, the strength, the stories within each movement. And who knows, maybe someday, there will be a beautiful pink tutu worn on that stage, reminding everyone to embrace the magic of ballet.

It's important to remember that dancing is not about perfection. It’s about expressing ourselves, our stories, our feelings, through movement. And that's the beauty of the Pink Tutu ethos: to encourage everyone to express themselves through their own individual style and interpretation of what makes them happy, graceful and empowered.

As the sun sets on another beautiful day, I'm ready to step into my dancing shoes and create a new Pink Tutu for my next adventure. After all, with every spin and leap, we make a little bit of magic happen.

Stay sparkly, my darlings, and remember: never be afraid to take the stage.

Yours in Pink Tutu,

Emma xx
