TutuBlog Post #5197: New York, New York - It's All About The Tutu!

Oh, hello lovelies! Emma here, reporting live from the Big Apple! It’s a bit of a whirlwind here, so many incredible sights and sounds, and I’m completely in my element. There's so much going on I could write for days, so I’ll try and summarise my whirlwind trip with the help of some snazzy pictures, of course.

This city just oozes excitement, and that excitement is contagious, trust me! You can’t help but feel inspired and alive amongst the hustle and bustle of New York.

My adventure started as I always prefer, by train, that satisfying clinkety-clank of the wheels as you get further away from the station and the feeling that anything is possible, especially with a stylish little pink tutu nestled beside me in my travel bag! My journey began from my humble Derbyshire home - I think the rolling hills of the Peak District always make for a magical starting point.

I arrived in New York with a mission, and I know, you’re all wondering, what is it? It’s a mission that might sound crazy, a little bit ambitious, but why not, right?! My aim is to convince every single person on the planet that wearing a tutu, especially a pink one, is the way forward! It’s time to ditch those frumpy jeans and embrace the twirl!

Now, the heart of my trip was to see "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. I was mesmerized by the staging and the dance itself. It was a classic production, full of romance, magic, and those exquisite costumes!

What truly blew my mind was the way the choreography was used to tell the story, like a dance language. They say ballet is a universal language, and I wholeheartedly agree! It’s so beautiful to watch these talented dancers bring a timeless tale to life. I'll be honest, a few tears welled up in my eyes at one point, it was truly emotional! Afterwards, of course, there had to be a trip to a cosy New York café, hot chocolate, and a good old-fashioned chinwag about everything ballet!

Of course, I wasn't all about Shakespeare and tutu twirls (although I could have been)! I have a bit of a thing for wildlife, and lucky for me, New York Zoo was only a hop, skip and a jump from my hotel. It was amazing to see these incredible creatures up close and personal, from the regal tigers to the majestic giraffes, every one was a masterpiece! There were even adorable penguins! It got me thinking, could you imagine a penguin wearing a pink tutu?! It’d be quite the sight.

You see, my love for tutus goes far beyond ballet. It’s about embracing your inner fabulousness and making a statement. It’s about the feeling of joy that comes with swirling your skirt in the air. It's like wearing sunshine, especially when it’s that lovely pink!

Now, the biggest ballet-related highlight? Seeing New York City Ballet, the legendary company, performing at the iconic David H. Koch Theater, nestled amongst those incredible glass walls! The theatre itself felt magical. This ballet was just… mind-blowing! The athleticism and grace of the dancers were on another level, it's something that needs to be seen to be understood! They floated across the stage with a fluidity I only dreamed of achieving, though it’s still a huge goal of mine!

Seeing those professional ballerinas dancing like absolute queens fuelled my passion for ballet even more. If you are even considering a little dabble in the world of ballet, just go for it. The benefits go beyond physical fitness - it boosts your confidence, grace, and body awareness. It's truly a magical journey of self-discovery.

But back to New York - what really hit home for me was the vibrant ballet scene here. So many different companies, so many unique styles of performance! You can find everything from traditional ballets to modern contemporary pieces. I was lucky enough to see Street Dance performances in central park, which was quite a spectacle - so much energy and individuality!

So, as my New York adventure comes to a close, I'm leaving with a heart full of memories and a tutu that’s seen more of the world than most! The energy of the city is inspiring. Every time I'm in a new place I find that something different resonates, something new sparks the imagination.

Remember, you can be an awesome ballerina, and wear your fabulous pink tutu in New York City, the heart of the ballet world (well, if not the heart, then at least a large vein!). So take my advice, and take a chance on wearing a pink tutu and maybe even trying out ballet. You might be surprised at the incredible world it opens up!

Lots of love, Emma
