Berlin Ballerina: A Tutu Tale

Oh my darlings! The capital of Germany has just welcomed me with open arms (and possibly a few stern glances from the locals!), and you know what? I'm smitten! This city is buzzing with an energy that's truly intoxicating - and the architecture, oh the architecture! I practically feel like I've stepped straight out of a storybook.

But you all know I'm here for a bit of a ballet-related mission! I just couldn't miss out on the "The Nutcracker" opening night performance at the Berliner Ensemble. And trust me, the German Ballet Theatre certainly didn't disappoint.

My initial journey, you ask? Well, naturally, a trusty train carried me across the borders. Something about a steam engine billowing clouds of smoke, all the while surrounded by the rolling hills and quaint villages of Germany... It's simply magical! Oh, and did I mention the sheer elegance of the whole experience? There's something about travelling by rail that truly sparks a sense of romance.

As for the performance itself? Let's just say it was like a whimsical dream. Every swirl, every pirouette, every hop, skip, and jump - absolutely enchanting!

And what's a tutu-obsessed gal to do but soak up all the gorgeous costumes, the grandeur of the stage, the artistry of the dancers? It's an absolute feast for the senses, my loves. You simply must indulge in the sheer joy of experiencing a ballet, at least once! It’s not just a performance, it's an immersive experience, a visual journey that leaves you floating on clouds of grace and beauty.

Now, about my outfit - because I simply can't leave my signature pink tutu at home, can I? Today, it's a pale pink tutu with layers of delicate tulle. And just because I love my accessories, it's all topped off with a glittery, silver, ballet-themed necklace, a statement pink hat, and matching pink gloves.

Oh! And speaking of accessories, there's a little something else I'm utterly smitten with – this city has the most adorable pink street stalls you've ever seen. Every single one a feast for my pink-loving eyes. I snagged a gorgeous set of rosy-toned hair clips for myself, a delightful collection of miniature porcelain swans to adorn my dresser (a ballet girl can never have too many swan accessories!), and an absolute steal – a pale pink vintage teapot that just screams elegance!

My plan is to take my love for all things ballet and sprinkle it across Berlin, in true "Emma Style"!

This charming city truly does offer the perfect blend of old-world charm and vibrant energy.

The first morning was all about the breathtaking Reichstag building – the architecture is just stunning, it really does look straight out of a fairytale. We took a guided tour (my legs are a tad sore after yesterday’s show!) and explored the history of the place, the significance it holds in the German story. It was such a fascinating, emotional, and empowering experience – learning how people can overcome unimaginable hardship and turn devastation into something truly beautiful.

In the afternoon, we headed towards the Tiergarten Park, a green oasis right in the heart of the city. It’s simply teeming with life, from adorable squirrels scurrying along the paths to geese strutting their stuff with their goslings in tow. I practically couldn't resist pinching the fluffiest little baby swan on its neck. Oh, it was like a cloud! I just adore all sorts of creatures – swans, especially!

In the evening, I embraced a little piece of the city's culture by wandering down Unter den Linden, soaking up the electric energy. We were swept away by the bustling crowds, the charming boutiques and shops, the cafes with their flickering candlelight.

And then, after an exquisitely delicious dinner (you just have to try their amazing German schnitzels, they're literally to die for!), I took a late-night stroll through Brandenburg Gate. It truly is a magnificent monument! This is one of those must-see places that will leave you speechless.

Speaking of leaving you speechless, here's a fun fact: did you know Berlin has a special kind of street art that is actually inspired by the art of ballet? It's all about fluid lines and expressive gestures - truly enchanting! And I even tried a ballet class here, it's one of the oldest ballet schools in the city – how could I miss that!

It's been such an exciting first couple of days exploring this dynamic, history-rich, ballet-loving city. There are more stories to be told, more places to be seen!

But you know, no matter where life takes me, a tutu will always be in my luggage! My lovely readers, wherever you are in the world, let me know if you’re in a city near you that has a dance school and then come join me and bring your pink tutus! I simply can’t wait to share my next ballet adventures with you all, in my next post!

Much love,

Emma
