Southampton in a Sunshine-Yellow Tutu: TutuBlog Post #9808
Hello my lovely Tutu-ettes! It's Emma here, bringing you sunshine from the beautiful city of Southampton, on the south coast. You know me, I always bring the colour, but this time it's not just my favourite pink, but a delightful shade of sunshine yellow! Yes, my dearest Tutu-ettes, I've ventured out of my beloved Derbyshire and am feeling like a little ray of light in this seaside town!
I love Southampton; it has this charming, slightly bohemian vibe that whispers stories of sailors and seaside picnics. The moment I stepped off the train - I always opt for the train, it's so much more romantic than flying, wouldn't you agree? - I felt the buzz of excitement in the air, the salty tang of the sea, and an almost infectious energy that had me wanting to dance right there on the station platform!
Well, you can't just start twirling in public, can you? But let's be honest, I probably would have, except I was so excited about my first stop: the Southampton City Art Gallery. I adore the way old buildings tell stories of a city's past. And this grand, imposing gallery felt like the perfect setting for a little tutu-themed photoshoot. The sunlight streaming through the grand windows, illuminating my sunshine-yellow tulle? Pure magic.
Don't think this gallery just has dusty old paintings either. Their contemporary art exhibition was phenomenal! Imagine my delight when I stumbled across a beautiful mixed-media piece using feathers, delicate wire, and what seemed like, well, tutu fabrics! It was almost as if the artist understood my inner desire to bring the ballet world into every facet of my life.
My wanderings took me next to the historic Southampton Docks where the air was alive with the cries of gulls and the low rumble of ships coming and going. I was in awe of the majestic size of the vessels. I couldn't resist hopping onto a ferry, imagining I was part of a whimsical musical, navigating the high seas with my Tutu troupe, pirouetting on the deck with the ocean breeze in our hair!
Now, my sweet tutu-lovers, a little fun fact for you: did you know that Southampton holds the distinction of being the port where the Titanic set sail? It makes you realise the history and wonder contained in every cobbled street and grand building. There's an element of romantic tragedy here, and of course, that echoes in my ballerina heart. I can just imagine a ballet inspired by this incredible journey – Titanic: The Ballet – a heart-stopping story of love, loss, and hope. I'm just going to imagine it for now, but if you’re looking to set the stage, I’m definitely your girl.
Of course, my time in Southampton was not just about beautiful buildings and salty air, it was also about discovering delicious treats. This city has a foodie haven in the shape of The French Market and believe me, my darlings, the pastries there were practically created for my tutu-loving palate. Think flaky croissants with creamy almond filling, and delicate macarons with the most beautiful colours you could imagine. Imagine my delight as I devoured them with a mischievous glint in my eye and the gentle breeze teasing my tutu's layers!
Of course, no trip to Southampton is complete without a beachside stroll! So I donned my bright-yellow tutu (with a little extra tulle for good measure, of course), put my hair in a charming braid, and walked barefoot on the golden sands, listening to the waves crashing against the shore. A simple pleasure, yet so satisfying.
You know me, tutu-lovers, I can’t resist a bit of wildlife exploration! And Southampton didn't disappoint! A quick boat ride took me to the magical Isle of Wight, home to the enchanting Isle of Wight Wildlife Park. It’s an absolutely gorgeous setting where graceful giraffes gaze at the world with curious eyes, majestic lions roar with a power that resonates in my heart, and even the timid deer nibble peacefully on lush green grasses. It was a delightful reminder that the world is full of beauty and grace, whether you find it in a tutu on a ballet stage or on a lush green hillside.
My adventures in Southampton weren't solely focused on beautiful sights, delicious treats and breathtaking wildlife. You know me, dear Tutu-ettes, my mission in life is to inspire you all to don a tutu and join me in the wonderful world of dance! And luckily, Southampton provided the perfect opportunity to do just that!
I had the joy of attending an incredible performance by the Southampton Ballet Company. It was a spectacular interpretation of Giselle, and it had me glued to my seat, transported into the world of heartbreak, passion, and ultimately, acceptance. The choreography was exquisite, the music was breathtaking, and the ballerinas’ dedication to their craft had my heart singing! After the performance, I was able to chat with a few of the dancers - a perfect opportunity to spread my love of ballet and encourage those who were curious to take their first steps.
Speaking of first steps, after watching the ballet performance, I couldn’t help but be inspired to find a ballet class of my own. My quest for perfection (and a good sweat) took me to The Dance Centre in the heart of Southampton. Let me tell you, I had a fantastic time! The atmosphere was friendly and inviting, and the instructors were inspiring and enthusiastic. I am truly inspired to take ballet classes again, not just for the exercise, but also for the sense of community and the opportunity to learn something new.
Of course, I couldn't leave Southampton without a little bit of retail therapy. A stroll down the High Street gave me an opportunity to find a stunning pair of ballet pumps in a beautiful shade of dusty rose. And they matched perfectly with the pretty floral skirt I bought to accentuate my sunshine-yellow tutu. You can't underestimate the power of a perfect accessory to make your Tutu sparkle.
So there you have it, dear Tutu-ettes: Southampton, a delightful little haven of seaside charm and graceful elegance! And I left it feeling refreshed, invigorated, and most importantly, ready to embrace the next adventure with a bounce in my step and a happy song in my heart!
So, if you’re looking for a place that seamlessly blends art, history, nature, and delicious treats, I’d highly recommend adding Southampton to your travel itinerary!
Now, it’s back to my daily ballet routine, practising pirouettes and stretching my legs, until my next Tutu adventure! Remember, dear Tutu-ettes, the world is your dance floor, so don’t be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina.
With love and twirls, Emma xx
