Today, we're skipping through Ruislip, a charming little corner of West London that feels worlds away from the bustling centre. I've got my trusty yellow tutu on (yes, yellow! It's my new favourite colour - a little sunshine in my life, just like Ruislip!). And wouldn't you know it, the perfect setting for today's adventure just happens to be a lovely old theatre, the Ruislip Manor & Uxbridge Arts Centre. It's a real hidden gem!
My love for all things ballet has taken me to so many fabulous places, and Ruislip is just another lovely addition to my list of "Must-Visit Ballet Destinations". I just had to visit this stunning art deco building to see the wonderful "Alice in Wonderland" ballet performance they were putting on this week. Let's just say my childhood dreams of Alice’s Wonderland were definitely re-imagined in a way I never thought possible. The costumes were phenomenal, the music was just incredible, and the dancers were truly captivating! Honestly, I found myself feeling a bit like Alice in the story, wondering what strange and wonderful adventure was going to pop up next.
I think one of the things that makes this theatre so special is its unique mix of history and artistry. Built in 1925 as a "pictures palace", it's a living, breathing example of a bygone era. It really felt like I'd been transported back in time to when film stars were truly stars! I’d imagine this grand building bustling with all the glamour of that period and it definitely stirred up some amazing fantasies of ballet, fashion, and drama I just can't wait to get back to Ruislip again to enjoy another dose of vintage charm!
It was also such a treat to take a little wander around Ruislip Gardens and soak up the sights. Such beautiful old streets! You’d hardly believe how close it is to the bustle of London! It’s perfect for a wander through charming villagey pubs, bakeries, cafes and parks! I mean, you don’t want to be missing out on the real life, traditional pubs. Ruislip Gardens is like stepping out of a fairy tale. So I popped in to a lovely little pub called The Royal Oak for a spot of lunch. I have to tell you - the pie and mash is just phenomenal! And then it was off to Ruislip Lido! What a fab place to unwind with the sounds of nature! I even got to watch some local wildlife (lots of ducklings!), all with a good view of the water from my yellow tutu. Who knew that you could have this little piece of heaven right on your doorstep?
My top tips for a trip to Ruislip in a tutu:
- Dress to impress! This is your chance to let your inner ballerina shine. Whether you prefer a traditional tutu, a fluffy petticoat, or a bold contemporary piece, make it your own. The world’s your stage, and it’s your tutu you need to show off to the world!
- Grab a classic tea and scone in the prettiest café you can find! (Or a classic pie and mash if you’re like me!) Nothing says Ruislip like afternoon tea while sipping a lovely cup of hot, strong tea in the sun.
- Explore! From the theatre and Ruislip Lido to the historic high street and beyond, Ruislip is bursting with things to discover. You never know what beautiful secret you're going to stumble across.
Final Thoughts
I love the way Ruislip brings together the best of both worlds - historic charm and modern life. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the magic of theatre, embrace the beauty of nature, and still be a stone’s throw from London. This trip was the perfect opportunity to experience a different side of the city. It felt like a whole other world - like an adventure I was part of! I’d encourage anyone who’s got a love of the countryside to make sure they get over to Ruislip and soak it all in.
