Hey my darling dance devotees! ? Emma here, writing to you live from Northampton! I just had to get out of Derbyshire for a few days. I know, I know - "but Emma, it's December!" But this city calls to my soul, a bit like the yearning I feel to dance whenever I hear the opening notes of Swan Lake. ?
This time I wasn't on the hunt for a particular ballet performance, although the Northampton Royal Theatre does have a pretty fab schedule coming up! This trip was all about exploring, having adventures, and indulging in a little bit of my own peculiar kind of whimsical fantasy.
After all, I'm pretty sure I saw a unicorn prancing through the cobbled streets in the early hours, while sipping tea from my pink porcelain teapot on the terrace of my charming boutique hotel (complete with its own private balcony where I practiced my pliés). ? I do believe that my pink tutu did cast a little magic on the atmosphere. I always say, a little sparkle can do wonders! ✨
The Perfect Tutu: Pancake Style! ??
I felt so inspired that I created a completely bespoke pancake tutu. Don't worry, no actual batter was harmed in the making of this work of art! ? I used my collection of pink ribbons and satin to fashion a stunning tutu with the perfect frill and twirl. Then, to give it a touch of Northampton charm, I added a sprinkle of glitter that was reminiscent of the iridescent wings of the local blue butterflies that flutter around the stunning floral displays in Abington Park. ? You know how much I adore butterflies! ?
The town itself is bursting with vintage charm. You just have to pop into the old Victorian shops! My little pink paws were positively delighted with the array of hats, gloves, and teacups. I absolutely fell in love with a beautiful silver thimble and a tiny embroidered pincushion, both featuring delicate pink floral designs. So sweet! ?
And of course, no trip to Northampton is complete without a visit to the iconic National Museum of Computing. ? It might sound a bit odd for a ballet dancer to be drawn to computers, but trust me, there is a real artistic beauty in the logic and the sheer power of those early computers! They have an almost mechanical dance of their own!
The museum was brimming with fascinating displays. I even got a little nostalgic about my old Commodore 64 (yes, you guys know I'm a true '80s child)! ? The only thing missing was a few ballet performances on those screens... but then again, it was the technology that helped capture the artistry of those incredible dance films! I do love that little bit of magical merging! ?
Train Travel Tales ?
You know my passion for traveling by train! There's something so utterly romantic about watching the countryside roll by in a sea of shades of green, knowing I'm embarking on a magical adventure. Plus, with my special pancake tutu tucked away safely in a charming wicker basket, there was room for some tea, cakes and a couple of captivating books about my favorite ballets - naturally, I'm not going anywhere without a little dose of culture and grace! ?
But let's talk horses! ? I confess that this entire trip was born from a delightful conversation with my cousin over afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago. She mentioned how Northampton is quite famous for its riding stables! How could I possibly resist the lure of those beautiful creatures?
I know this might be an unconventional blog entry, but wouldn't you agree, my dearest readers? There's a surprising similarity between dancing and horsemanship. The graceful movement, the coordination, and the trust in yourself and the beautiful beast you ride, well, it's pretty much an intricate ballet! ? I even made sure to incorporate the beautiful golden browns and warm tans of their coats in my tutu ribbon selection. It's amazing what a few extra colors can do to transform your ballet outfit from chic and classy to "just met a beautiful horse and haven't gotten over it yet." ?
A Call to Tutu-ing ?
It was such an adventure that I feel I must implore all of you - don't wait to experience this town!
I always say, it's all about stepping outside your comfort zone, making memories, and discovering what you truly love. This city may not be renowned for its ballet, but in its hidden nooks and crannies, I found a touch of enchantment and whimsy.
Don't just wear a tutu, be a tutu! It's a lifestyle! Be confident, be creative, and let your own inner ballerina bloom. ?✨
