Hello my beautiful ballerinas! Emma here, back with another fabulous post from your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing travel blogger. And let me tell you, this week has been pure magic. This past Friday, I traded my usual Derbyshire hills for the bustling streets of London. I wasn't there for the usual tourist traps, mind you, oh no! This adventure was about following my passion, my love, my life: ballet. And I had the most fantastic day experiencing it in all its glory in Hammersmith.
As you know, I always strive to find new ways to explore the wonderful world of dance. My love for ballet goes beyond just a twirl and a leap; I'm utterly mesmerised by its beauty, elegance and incredible physicality. It's the perfect blend of strength and grace, of discipline and freedom, all culminating in a captivating performance.
But enough about my love of ballet, let's talk about the adventure. Arriving in Hammersmith on a Friday afternoon felt like stepping into a fairytale. The sun was shining, the air crisp with a touch of winter chill. I took the train from Derby, of course, it's my preferred method of travel; something about the gentle sway of the carriages and the countryside flying by always calms me. Plus, there's something undeniably chic about wearing a pink tutu on a train - even better if you're the only one doing it!
An Italian Touch in Hammersmith
Once in Hammersmith, I had a delicious, if somewhat rushed, lunch of a scrumptious pasta dish at a little Italian restaurant called La Bella Vita. The place was buzzing with happy diners, and even the food itself had an energetic charm, I can't say the food was ballet-themed, but there was a distinct twirl of my fork around the al dente pasta, And let's be honest, pasta is the best dance partner!
My evening began at the renowned Hammersmith Apollo, one of London's oldest and most iconic venues. But the show wasn't your typical pop star or musical production. No, this evening was all about ballet, I got a sneak peak backstage before the performance and the energy was tangible. It's just the best when you can feel the anticipation in the air, as the ballet world's most accomplished performers warmed up for their grand performance. I swear I could have heard the rhythmic tap of dancing shoes on the wooden floors right through my thick pink tulle tutu!
The evening's program showcased the artistry of the London Contemporary Ballet Company. The company was founded by famed ballet dancer and choreographer Deirdre Chapman in 2008, and their work pushes the boundaries of classical dance with its modern flair. And honestly? It took my breath away!
Their performance was simply divine. The stage was ablaze with intricate lighting, creating dramatic silhouettes and adding an ethereal touch to the dancers' movements. Their fluidity, their elegance, their strength - it all felt so effortlessly powerful, so captivating. The movements were so precise and expressive; each step, each gesture spoke volumes about the story being told. The show wasn't simply a sequence of dance steps, but a symphony of emotions and expressions, a masterpiece crafted by the sweat, passion, and sheer talent of these amazing performers.
Finding The "Pink Tutu" In Everyone
Even after the performance ended, the magic lingered in the air. There was an undeniable feeling of community, a sense of connection that bloomed amongst the ballet enthusiasts and dance-lovers gathered. It was a celebration of beauty and grace, of strength and emotion. And I, with my pink tutu as a constant reminder of my love for ballet, felt utterly embraced by this world.
The show made me contemplate the power of ballet. I see ballet as an art that's not just visually striking, but deeply evocative, communicating emotions that sometimes words can't. In our chaotic, fast-paced world, ballet offers a sanctuary, a moment to truly connect with beauty, with emotions, with ourselves.
And I truly believe that everyone can find their inner ballerina. It's not just about performing on stage or wearing a beautiful tutu (although I do recommend that!) It's about finding the elegance and the power within yourself, the passion and the grace that lie dormant inside. You might not be a professional ballerina, but there is something truly special in embracing the elegance, grace and artistry of movement, and ballet is an incredible gateway to discover it!
It's about pushing yourself, learning something new, and challenging yourself to step out of your comfort zone. After all, it's not about being perfect, but about expressing yourself through movement, about embracing the joy and freedom of dance.
Pink Tutud, Wildlife & Train Tracks:
Of course, my weekend wouldn't be complete without a bit of my other favourite pastimes - nature walks! On Saturday, I headed to Richmond Park, London’s biggest Royal Park. The crisp air, the beautiful trees and the wild deer (I had my usual luck – saw none, just the tracks!) It was absolutely breath-taking.
I felt so calm amongst the natural wonders and the park felt almost surreal; I imagined myself in some kind of enchanting fairy tale land with its sprawling meadows, majestic oak trees and hidden pathways. And, of course, my pink tutu flowed with the wind beautifully amongst it all.
My time in Hammersmith was just a fleeting but enchanting glimpse of London's incredible ballet scene, an incredible journey filled with breathtaking performances, wonderful discoveries, and sparkling new memories. And now, I'm heading back home to Derbyshire, excited to share my stories and inspire everyone to discover their inner ballerina. Don't forget, everyone has the ability to express themselves through dance. It's all about having a little fun and unleashing your inner grace and power!
