Hello darlings! Emma here, ready to whisk you away on another delightful journey! This time, we're hopping aboard the "Tutu Express" and steaming off to the charming town of Nuneaton, Warwickshire! Now, before you ask, no, the train doesn't actually have a tutu – though I'm sure I could persuade the guard to lend me his hat for a cheeky photo op. ?
Anyway, enough with the train puns (sorry, I couldn't resist!), let's get on to the good stuff: why I'm so excited to be in Nuneaton! This sweet little town holds a special place in my heart for a couple of reasons: one, its connection to the world of fashion, particularly historical dressmaking; and two, because it's only a stone's throw from the magnificent National Forest! Let's unpack both those threads a little, shall we?
Firstly, fashion! Nuneaton's known as the "Home of the Pannier" – how cool is that?! Did you know that right here, the history of the elaborate skirt supports, those magnificent hoops that gave women such a graceful, regal silhouette, dates back to the 1700s?! I mean, can you imagine?! It's like a dream come true, walking through the cobbled streets, picturing all the beautiful ladies strutting in their magnificent gowns, all thanks to the handiwork of the local crafters. Imagine a whole day dedicated to the pannier, with parades, demonstrations, workshops – I’m getting a little too excited!
And speaking of elegant fashion, what could be more exquisite than a tutu, right? It's no surprise that Nuneaton boasts an incredibly vibrant textile scene. After a quick visit to a few vintage clothing shops, I was inspired to design a tutu using scraps of silk, chiffon, and taffeta! I've dubbed it the "Nuneaton Dreamscape Tutu." The delicate layering, reminiscent of the soft hues of a setting sun, is paired with vibrant pink embroidery to honour this wonderfully whimsical town. Let's be real, I’ve already planned a whole Instagram shoot!
Now, on to the second reason I'm giddy as a girl on pointe: the National Forest. Just a short train ride away, it's a haven for nature lovers like me. I love walking through the woodland paths, listening to the birds chirping and the gentle rustle of leaves underfoot. There's something so calming about nature, don’t you think?
To be completely honest, it was the wildlife that drew me in, particularly the red squirrels. So, I packed my camera, put on my “Red Squirrel Tutu” (with its cheeky little squirrel pom-pom embellishments) and headed for a day of nature spotting! And wouldn’t you know it, after only an hour or so, there she was – a magnificent, vibrant red squirrel scampering up a tree! It's like they were designed by nature to compliment a ballerina's dress, don’t you think? She was absolutely adorable.
To unwind after my nature adventure, I decided to treat myself to a decadent afternoon tea at The Little Tea Shop, nestled right in the heart of town. If there's one thing I've learned about myself, it’s that it’s impossible to say no to a tiered stand piled high with dainty sandwiches, delicate cakes, and, of course, my favourite - freshly brewed tea! Just perfection!
While I was savouring my scones and sipping my Earl Grey, I couldn't help but think about my mission in life – to spread the joy of dance and encourage everyone to embrace the magic of a tutu. Whether it's swirling in your living room or gracing a grand stage, the feeling of a twirling tutu is magical!
This day out has re-energised me and reminded me why I started this blog: to spread some tutu love to the world. Whether it’s the joy of a fluffy pink tutu, the grace of a pannier, or the beauty of a nature reserve, it’s about embraceing the wonderful, the elegant, the magical in all things!
So, go on, dust off your ballet shoes, don your fanciest tutus (or maybe even try a pannier, who knows! ) and let's celebrate the beauty that lies around us. You can’t tell me there isn’t at least a little tutu in every one of us!
