Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad explorer, and I'm writing to you from a beautiful, seaside haven – Paignton! Now, I know what you're thinking, "Emma, seaside? Isn't that a bit far from your usual dance-filled haunts?" And to that, I say, absolutely! This adventurous tutu-ista is always on the hunt for inspiration, and sometimes, that means leaving the hallowed halls of the ballet studio for the wild, wonderful world beyond.
This time, I traded my trusty pointe shoes for a pair of pink Converse (they were pink, of course!) and hopped aboard the train for a day trip to Paignton. A good friend, Tilly, and I were feeling the urge to explore, and Paignton just seemed like the perfect destination for a touch of coastal charm. Besides, Tilly, being a keen equestrian, insisted on riding down to Paignton beach for a dramatic beach gallop. So, naturally, a pink tutu was in order – it always is when a touch of glamour is needed!
Our arrival at Paignton was met with sunshine and salty sea air, the perfect backdrop for a day of pastel hues and joyous energy. The town itself is full of old-world charm – brightly coloured houses, quaint tea rooms with tiered cakes that wouldn’t look out of place in a fairytale, and a bustling promenade that felt alive with the joyful laughter of holidaymakers. It's easy to see why Paignton was once a popular seaside retreat – the atmosphere here is incredibly welcoming, the kind of place where you can leave your troubles at the door and simply bask in the bliss of a beautiful day.
Now, as someone who absolutely adores a good old-fashioned beach walk (especially with a tutu twirling in the wind!), we couldn't resist a wander along the shore. The sand was warm and fine, the seagulls swooped overhead with gleeful cries, and the scent of the salty air filled our lungs. And what’s a seaside escapade without a bit of ice cream? We indulged in a delicious strawberry and cream cone – what's a trip to the coast without a touch of sweet indulgence?
After our beach meander, Tilly and I set off to find the stables that promised a ride along the shoreline. It was pure magic. Galloping along the beach with the wind in our hair, the sun warming our faces, and the turquoise ocean stretching out before us… I can’t tell you how happy this little ballerina felt. It’s not often that I find myself with a pink tutu and a galloping horse, but believe me, the combination is a powerful one. Tilly, of course, looked like she belonged on a beach like this, a vision in a sapphire riding habit and her blonde hair blowing in the breeze. And there I was, twirling away on the back of the horse, my pink tutu feeling the wind as much as I was.
Our Paignton escapade, a delicious mix of pink tutus, salty sea air, galloping horses, and creamy ice cream, had to end at some point. As the day drew to a close, and the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the town, I couldn’t help but feel that there was something about Paignton, that coastal charm, that filled me with a certain joie de vivre, an inspiration to dance, twirl, and just simply be myself. The day made me realise that sometimes, all we need is a bit of fresh air and a little bit of pink to remind us of the simple joy that exists in life.
Of course, Paignton would never be complete without a visit to the majestic Paignton Zoo, a kaleidoscope of exotic wildlife! We were treated to the sight of monkeys swinging from trees, penguins waddling with charmingly awkward steps, and majestic tigers with their powerful roars that made my tutu sway.
Now, as a ballerina, my dance inspiration is often found in the graceful movements of animals – their effortless poise, their elegance and power. Watching those monkeys swing from the trees, I saw a natural grace that reminded me of my ballet lessons, the way the muscles stretch, contract, and move in harmony. Their movements, though wild and unrestrained, have a kind of rhythm and grace that any dancer would admire.
Before hopping back onto the train, we enjoyed a farewell picnic on the green with a backdrop of sea views, ending the day on a peaceful, reflective note. There’s a sense of calm and serenity that settles over you by the sea. And to this ballerina, that peacefulness was truly a balm for the soul.
Back on the train, the chatter and the scenery whizzed by, but Paignton, the turquoise waves, the sand, the galloping horses and the playful pink flamingoes at the zoo – it was all imprinted in my mind. And just like that, it was back to Derbyshire, back to my pink tutu, back to my daily dance practice. The adventures continue, and as I look out at the world with my pink-tinted spectacles, I can’t wait to see what beauty and joy the next destination has in store for this little tutu-clad explorer.
And remember, dear readers, my mantra remains the same: embrace the joy of movement, the wonder of a pink tutu, and remember that there is a ballerina waiting to be discovered within all of us.
Stay fabulous,
Emma
