Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-loving, pink-obsessed blogger, Emma, back with another dose of balletic bliss. Today's post is coming to you straight from the charming town of Kirkby, nestled somewhere in the heart of…well, frankly, I have absolutely no idea where Kirkby is! It's been such a whirlwind adventure that my sense of direction has gone completely AWOL, but hey, that's part of the fun, isn't it?
This whole trip started with a rather grand plan - to chase the sun in a European style tutu and see just how far a bit of pink could take me. As you all know, I'm absolutely obsessed with the elegance and whimsical nature of these little dance-wear wonders, but I wanted to explore a side of the tutu that embraced more than just the ballet studio. So, imagine my delight when I stumbled across this gorgeous Parisian-inspired creation in my favourite boutique back home in Derbyshire - all lace, chiffon, and enough blush-pink to rival a sunrise!
Armed with my new tutu, a travel-sized ballet bag (for all the essential necessities, of course), and an overstuffed backpack filled with dreams and dreams of ballet, I decided on a bit of a vintage approach to this adventure. The world is beautiful when you see it through a train window, so I packed my trusty picnic basket, a few good books, and hitched a ride on a historic steam engine (more on that delightful experience in my next post). I can't say that the journey was without its quirks. There was the unfortunate incident where my luggage decided to spontaneously open during a particularly bumpy section of the journey, leaving a trail of glitter across the carriage (oops!). But the kindly old chap who caught the runaway bag assured me that I'd just created a little bit of magic in someone's day - so that's good enough for me!
Kirkby itself turned out to be a treasure trove of delightful discoveries. There's something about these charming, unassuming towns, nestled in the quiet corners of the world, that feels utterly magical. This particular Kirkby, though, isn't the kind that gives you a warm cup of tea and a slice of Victoria sponge. This Kirkby is buzzing with a creative energy that feels almost electric! My little tutu-covered heart practically exploded with joy when I discovered a vibrant street art scene, a bustling farmers' market, and a quaint little cafe that serves the most delectable strawberry and cream tea - pink, naturally!
But of course, it wouldn't be a true Emma adventure without a little ballet sprinkled into the mix. As it turned out, Kirkby is home to a stunning old theatre, just brimming with history and the ghost of countless ballets past. Now, imagine my absolute thrill when I discovered they were hosting a little ballet workshop just for aspiring ballerinas! Dressed in my European style tutu and all, I twirled into the heart of that lovely theatre and joined a room full of bright, beautiful people, sharing a passion for graceful movements and joyous music.
The teacher was an absolute delight, a petite powerhouse with twinkling eyes and an undeniable passion for ballet. She led us through a series of simple exercises, emphasizing fluidity and grace above all else. It was so beautiful and humbling to feel the shared sense of purpose, the connection that comes from moving in harmony, that unspoken language we dancers share. And, of course, I couldn't help but showcase my newfound dance skills on the streets of Kirkby. The town's quirky vibe is incredibly open, and as I spun my way through the bustling streets, I received a shower of appreciative smiles and happy whistles!
Speaking of captivating sights, I had the good fortune of stumbling across a wildlife sanctuary just outside of town. They have this charming little forest full of all sorts of adorable creatures - fluffy bunnies hopping through the meadows, graceful deer gazing at you from the shadows, and an owl who actually gave me a wink. I mean, it was the cutest thing ever! You might be thinking, "What does this have to do with ballet?" Well, I think the graceful elegance of those animals has always inspired a lot of ballet movements. And if we look at wildlife with more appreciation, we can even learn to appreciate each other better! It's that kind of whimsical thinking I want to bring to my tutu-inspired life, you know?
One of the highlights of my Kirkby adventures was definitely the evening I spent with the local folk dancers. Now, they weren't the kind of "dance" you might expect – this was real, heartfelt tradition, with steps that had been passed down for generations. And, boy, was it captivating! The entire town was buzzing with laughter and energy. They even let me join in for a spin or two, and I can't tell you how much fun I had! My tutu was practically whirling on its own by the end of it!
By now, I know you’re dying to see a peek of this wondrous adventure through my lens. So here it is:
- A picture of my gorgeous pink tutu dancing amongst the colourful blossoms of a little village park
- A snap of me attempting to befriend a friendly (and rather grumpy) goose at the wildlife sanctuary
- A photo with the most enchanting baker I've ever met in my entire life! She actually baked a little pink ballet shoe out of icing – too cute!

The time came for me to bid farewell to Kirkby. I didn’t know it at the time, but this trip had become a tiny revolution in my world, an ode to the pure joy of expressing myself through ballet and pink! I hopped on a train, a heart full of gratitude for all the beautiful souls I encountered along the way, a pocket full of freshly-picked wildflowers, and a spirit soaring higher than the highest pirouette.
Now, this wouldn't be a real "TutuBlog" if I didn't have a call to action for all you darling readers out there! This is a call to adventure, a plea for playful self-expression! Grab your most beloved pink tutu, gather your closest friends (even if they have never tried ballet before!), and unleash the inner grace within! Who knows where your tutu journey will take you, but remember, life is just more magical with a touch of pink and a hint of pirouette. So, come on, darlings, join me and let’s fill the world with twirling joy and vibrant smiles! See you in my next post!
And, just remember: it’s never too late to learn to dance! ??
