Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu princess Emma, back with another post straight from the heart of... Small Heath, Birmingham! Yep, you read that right, this tutu-tastic adventure takes me on a whirlwind journey from the green fields of Derbyshire to the heart of the Midlands, all in the name of dance and a little bit of yellow fever, let me explain...
Firstly, how dreamy was the train journey? Chugging through the English countryside, a little slice of peaceful serenity before diving into the vibrant buzz of Birmingham. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and me? I was basking in the golden glow of a stunning vintage yellow leotard that was begging to be shown off! You all know my love for all things pink, but a girl needs a little colour variation, and yellow is my current muse, especially when it's teamed with my favourite tutu, a wispy lilac confection that just swirls around my ankles.
Now, Small Heath! It’s such a beautiful old town with a real sense of history and a welcoming atmosphere that made me feel right at home. My mission was simple, to immerse myself in the vibrant dance scene here. This isn't a place just for the theatre – the whole community feels alive with dance. You can literally feel the passion in the air. I stopped by the Small Heath Library where I was welcomed by a group of young ballerinas, all eagerly learning new pirouettes in the most unlikely of locations, but hey, any space can be a stage, right? They even had their own little "Tutu Corner" - a corner devoted to tutu-themed books and crafts, genius!
But the real star of my show, darling, was the Birmingham Ballet Festival. It was a complete ballet extravaganza – the perfect mix of traditional ballets like "Swan Lake" and the thrilling contemporary works of some exciting new choreographers. My personal highlight? The young talented troupe from Birmingham's renowned "Phoenix Dance Academy", all those young hearts pirouetting their way into my heart with the pure passion they exuded. There was one dancer, a young lad named David who reminded me so much of my early days, all that nervous energy turning into graceful movements on stage.
Of course, no dance trip is complete without some fun with street ballet! A trip to the Grand Union Canal, my favourite way to experience a city, saw me joining a flash mob. Now, you've gotta imagine this, it’s just after lunchtime, and we’ve got a crowd of people strolling along the canal. Then, out of nowhere, these stunning young ballerinas burst onto the scene with their stunning movements. They had passersby transfixed – even the grumpy ducks on the canal were bobbing their heads along to the music.
For dinner, my love affair with pink led me to the delightful Sweetheart Cafe with the prettiest pink-and-white checkered floors and walls adorned with vintage floral wallpaper. The perfect place to unwind after a whirlwind day and to enjoy some yummy vegan cakes and a hot cuppa. Let's be honest, this cafe was a ballet dancer’s dream. I felt like a fairy princess sitting amongst the charming vintage decor sipping tea. It made me dream about starting a little pink tea room of my own one day!
But remember my yellow obsession? The next day, I headed to Cannon Hill Park, known for its lush gardens, peaceful lakes and.... a fabulous yellow bike trail! I couldn’t resist joining the throngs of cyclists (and a couple of skateboarders!), and yes, I did pedal my heart out while wearing my sparkly yellow leotard – why not?! It just added a dash of sparkle to my day, you know!
My day wasn’t complete without getting a dose of local wildlife. Birmingham has so much green space. In Cannon Hill Park I met a friendly family of ducks who didn’t seem to mind me sharing my little pack of sunflower seeds. They waddled after me like my very own fluffy little ballet dancers!
Before heading back to the serene Derbyshire hills, I couldn’t leave without one last dance class at The Birmingham Dance Centre. Now, I’m no prima ballerina, but every now and then, a good old ballet class makes me feel like I can soar across the world! So, I was there, dancing amongst all the other dedicated dancers. There was a mix of ages, from seasoned veterans to wide-eyed youngsters who reminded me of my early years when the world was a ballet shoe waiting to be worn! I can truly say that the dance energy of Birmingham is one to experience for yourself.
Now, let me leave you with my usual call to action:
- Ditch the comfy clothes and don a pink tutu! It’s the perfect way to spread some joy and let your inner ballerina shine!
- Join a ballet class, anywhere, anytime! No matter your age or experience, ballet is an amazing way to exercise and embrace your inner grace. You might just be surprised by how much fun you have!
Catch you all next time, darlings! Until then, twirl your worries away and spread the magic of dance wherever you are!
XOXO,
Emma
