Darlings, the world of ballet is a sea of tulle and sequins, but every now and then, a look emerges that captivates the imagination and becomes iconic. This February, as we embrace the spirit of romanticism and the vibrancy of new beginnings, it’s time to craft our own version of the world’s most popular tutu or leotard.
The Tutu- Choose your colour: The traditional soft pink is always in vogue, but for a bolder look consider a deep plum or a luminous emerald green. For a romantic touch, a light blush with a touch of shimmering silver would be divine.
- Embrace layers: A voluminous skirt is essential. Experiment with layers of tulle, from the most delicate and soft, to those with a crisp and slightly starchy feel, for added volume and texture.
- Add some sparkle: Let's be honest, darling, a bit of glitter is never out of place. Sprinkle a generous amount of shimmering sequins or even hand-sewn crystal embellishments along the edges of your tutu for an ethereal sparkle. If you're feeling especially daring, consider adding a row of beads cascading down the front, to be seen when your legs are in the fifth position.
- Tulle: You can find an extensive range at The Fabric Store in Covent Garden, and don’t forget to take a trip to Liberty, their silk tulle is exquisite!
- Sequins and Crystals: A jaunt to John Lewis for some sparkly embellishments is a must! You'll be spoilt for choice.
- Beads: For beads, I would recommend taking a day trip to the enchanting Portobello Road Market, it's overflowing with charm!
- Lace and other fabrics: I've always had great luck finding interesting fabrics and trim at Liberty of London, their vintage lace collection is particularly alluring. And a visit to Beyond Fabric on Kings Road is a real treat!
- Pick your style: The classic fitted leotard will never go out of style, but if you're looking for a modern touch, consider a plunging neckline or a back that showcases the lines of your body.
- The perfect colour: For a chic, sophisticated look, a simple black leotard is always a classic. But this February, I am utterly in love with the rich deep blue leotards, paired with striking gold trim, or even bold splashes of electric blue for a contemporary touch.
- Dare to embellish: The options are endless! You could add a delicate floral lace motif on the bodice, or create a stunning cutout design in the back, perhaps with shimmering embroidery outlining it for a subtle touch. But remember darling, too much embellishment is simply overwhelming. Choose just one statement piece!
- Leotard Base: For leotards, look no further than Capezio, they have all the essential basics. Don't forget to also visit Freed, they have a lovely selection of stretchy cotton, perfect for this look. For high-end basics, a trip to Dancewear Specialists on Regent Street will never disappoint.
- Embroidery and Trim: For embellishments, there is no place better than John Lewis for high-quality sequins, trim, and lace. For something unique, try browsing the enchanting shops of Portobello Road market. I am particularly partial to The Silk Shop!
Darling, as you embark on this journey to design your very own statement piece, embrace your inner ballerina. Let your creativity soar and experiment with colours, fabrics, and trims. Remember, you are not simply designing a tutu or a leotard; you are crafting an artistic masterpiece!
