It’s June!
It’s that time of year when our dance costumes can take us through from rehearsal to the big performance, so we’re in need of pieces that are stylish yet functional. And the focus this June is all about being both ethereal and modern.
I’ve always believed that there are two fundamental looks to achieving success on the stage: a glamorous, yet elegant tutu and an iconic, sleek leotard. So, my dears, let's get our sequins and tulle at the ready.
The Tutu
Firstly, let's talk tulle. You’ll need enough tulle for three to four layers, for that perfect, ethereal poof! Choose a vibrant colour that will really pop on stage, something like sapphire or a vibrant coral. Be sure to source your tulle from a specialist store – mine has always been _‘Sewing Secrets’_ in Notting Hill – it’s always a lovely day out!
Then we must focus on the bodice. Opt for a sweetheart neckline in either lace or velvet. For this season, we are going to be using a vibrant colour, something rich in tone – emerald or a luscious burgundy are just perfect. When selecting your fabric, choose one that is flexible but sturdy – a silk-velvet blend from _‘The Fabric Shop’_ in Belgravia is perfect.
To truly capture that contemporary, elegant aesthetic, the secret is to add subtle detail, my darlings! Some delicate, strategically placed crystals in a subtle pearlescent hue can do just that. And remember, a touch of rhinestones around the edges of the bodice is never a mistake! The store _‘The Rhinestone Company’_ in Soho is always well-stocked.
The Leotard
Now, for the leotard, we need to achieve that ultra-modern, yet effortlessly classic, silhouette.
And what better base to build upon than a leotard that compliments your every curve. This season is all about clean lines and sophistication – nothing too frilly, my dears. Start with a smooth-fitting, mid-leg leotard – mine has always been a _‘Ballet Classique’_ from Harrods - a truly luxurious cut that highlights our dancer’s form, and is comfortable for hours on stage! Choose a bold colour - crimson or a vibrant azure blue will work beautifully against any skin tone!
And just a touch of sparkle - never underestimate a strategic seam detail with sequins. These can accentuate your legs, define the bodice - it's the perfect balance of timeless and exciting! My go-to shop for embellishments has always been _‘Ballerina’s Boutique’_ in Kensington. They always have the most gorgeous range of sequined materials!
