Dearest darlings, it’s your favourite Prima Ballerina here! August is finally here, and with it comes the sunshine, the long, warm evenings, and, of course, the desire to twirl. But let’s face it, sometimes our tutus and leotards are more 'last season' than chic. That’s where I come in, my little swans. Today, I'm going to let you in on a little secret for designing the absolute most fabulous, show-stopping leotard and tutu that will have everyone in the studio swooning!
Step One: Finding Your Inspiration
Darling, the key to a truly iconic look is finding the right inspiration. For a summery feel, consider those dazzling Mediterranean sunsets or the ethereal glow of a moonlit ocean. Think vibrant colours like coral, turquoise, or lavender, paired with shimmering fabrics that reflect the light. Perhaps a little pattern to break the monotony? We're not talking clashing stripes here, my dears, but maybe a delicate floral pattern, or a graceful motif of tiny shells. Let the world be your canvas, my darlings!

The right materials are essential to your success. Here's what I would suggest:

Now, there’s that wonderful stretchy fabric available in gorgeous jewel tones, that's my favourite for an impactful look. - Tutu: You want tulle that dances and shimmers. The tulle at a store like Dance Direct will be more than perfect. This season's colour, dearies? Lilac, it is. Go for several layers for a voluminous look. The more, the merrier, I say!
- Optional embellishment: A scattering of sparkling crystals, pearls, or sequins. Just a hint, just enough to catch the light! I find the quality and price are great from Sew Ready, and don't forget to check the small haberdashery shops near your local dance studios.
Step Three: Unleash Your Creativity!
Now, for the exciting part - the design! If you're not confident in sewing, there are so many beautiful pre-made tutus and leotards out there. Just make sure they're of good quality. You can always jazz them up, with a dash of personal touch, be it an embroidered motif, a splash of color, or a smattering of sparkles. This is where your inspiration truly shines through! A little hot fix glue, a couple of hours and the most dazzling dancewear you’ve ever created, are all yours.
