The Perfect Tutu - Designing For Spring

Dearest dancers, March is upon us and, with it, a wave of exciting new trends. This season is all about celebrating individuality and colour, embracing femininity, but still showcasing those beautifully honed muscles.

My go-to for spring? A perfectly-cut leotard, coupled with a tutu that hints at classic ballet while feeling fresh and exciting. So, how do we get that winning look?

Your Canvas: The Leotard

  • Choose a leotard in a flattering shade of lilac or sky blue. Avoid overly bright colours that distract from the graceful lines of the body.
  • Look for a leotard with a classic scoop neck. The key here is simplicity. It’s all about showcasing those elegant lines and letting the choreography do the talking. A racerback style is a perfect choice too! It will enhance that graceful dancer’s silhouette, drawing the eye down from the shoulders. Remember to make sure it fits comfortably!
  • Fabrics? Personally, I love a lovely cotton blend for my leotard. This fabric feels like silk, moves like liquid gold, and doesn’t feel clingy! Remember it’s essential to select fabrics that are not only comfortable to wear, but allow for movement and flexibility. Nylon or silk can both be great choices, depending on what your individual preference is, and if the fabric needs to be opaque or translucent.
  • **Where to Buy**: Visit The Dancewear Shop for quality leotards, available online and across many locations! For fabrics, The Cloth Shop on Maddox Street is a must! They’re fabulous!

Adding Flourishes: Your Tutu

  • Opt for a tutu with a whimsical, tiered construction. These layered tulle tutus add that extra bounce and twirl to the look.
  • The color of the tutu should be light, delicate, and harmonious with the leotard, something soft and flowing, but never bland! Think blush pink, or an elegant, yet strong, coral, a vibrant jade, or a beautiful and intricate midnight blue - just let it complement your leotard!
  • **Key Tip:** This is your chance to play with embellishments! Think intricate hand-stitched patterns using sequins and beads. Do make sure the embroidery adds to your chosen style and complements your colour palette - don't go overboard! Subtlety is always more sophisticated.
  • **Where to Buy**: There are many wonderful ballet suppliers but my favourites include, well, honestly, anything designed by my dearest friend, Vivienne - a total legend! The craftsmanship and care taken with her designs are top tier, but if that’s not for you, Ballet Supplies International never fail, although, in truth, if I need something bespoke or custom, it’s Vivienne or my trusty dressmaker - they understand!

Remember, this season is about feeling bold, daring, and captivating, so embrace that freedom of expression. Whether you are performing on stage or enjoying a ballet class, this stunningly chic look is the key for a dazzling, expressive performance, dear dancers.
