Pink Tutu Design and Make at www pink tutu com

Darling, June is here, and with it comes a new season of performances, rehearsals, and of course, a whole new wardrobe of envy-inducing dancewear! So many possibilities! And who better to tell you how to create the perfect tutu or leotard for this season, darling, than me!

You know I’ve been around the block, as a dancer and as a woman, seen all the fads come and go, but this June, I know what will turn heads. Here’s how to do it!

Tutus for a Goddess

The modern ballerina is bold, strong, yet always graceful, and this June we need a tutu that says all that and more, but in a soft, beautiful, elegant way. My dear, our tutu needs a bit of ‘90s inspiration and some sleek elegance from a Grecian goddess, the colour should be like the waves of the sea and have some sparkle.

First, find a plain white tututu that's just below knee length (knee length is so old dear!) but make sure it’s beautifully fitted to your form - that means try on at least 5 of the same size from different manufacturers. You want it to look sculpted. The fabric must be stiff, like net but soft - nylon is excellent for that! It should stand out a little. The good folk at 'The Dance Warehouse’ have exactly the tutus we need.

Here’s the real magic

This is the part that’ll give your tutu that edge, that special something. You’re going to hand sew a sheer fabric panel - look for chiffon in aqua, light green, jade, or blue to your preference, that’s got an ethereal feel, maybe some subtle sparkle woven into the weave itself! And drape that around the bottom of your tutu in layers. If you get some with stretch it's even better. Make it about three feet long all the way around the tutu. It shouldn't hang loose, we want to suggest movement, the graceful curve of an ocean wave as it passes over a shoreline.

Here's where it gets creative

You can have an embellished leotard, or just a very, very basic, form fitting one that is plain black or white. I love to embellish my own! Find beautiful sea themed jewellery charms in the colours that you chose. Sea shells are too cliche though! We need dolphins, seashells, maybe some waves and currents - think nautical, but elegant! A simple silk cord to sew the jewellery to - choose gold and don’t let it clash with the colours you chose before! I like ‘Sew Beautiful’ for my supplies!

And voila! There’s your Grecian wave, elegant ballerina-themed masterpiece. This one’s got just the right amount of sparkle and glamour. A perfect match to the power and grace of a ballerina.

The Leotard

Your leotard must match that perfect grace. Go for one with an interesting cut, one that complements your shape, accentuates the right features, like a low back with maybe some strappy details and an elegant V-neck! The classic ‘Lilli’ brand has so many beautiful options but keep the fabric tight fitting.

And what colour? Oh my! A beautiful cerulean is so very chic right now. It has this cool but vibrant, elegant feel to it that says sophistication without screaming about it. And look! You could match that to the shades in your new wave-tutu and make the whole thing just divine! But again you have to decide what complements you. And we’ll need to see just what colour goes well with your hair and skin!

I like to add some crystals to my own, a simple and understated approach. Some rhinestones around the neckline or shoulders - nothing over the top but it will set you apart and it is also a very feminine, glamorous look!

Finally

Your dance shoes, dear! If it's just practice, stick with the soft ballet slippers, and maybe try them in a gorgeous color to match - maybe that beautiful shade of blue. But if it's a big performance, well that’s for another article!
