March is here!

Can you believe it’s March already? That glorious, blustery springtime is on the horizon and for us, that means one thing… new outfits for the season! Let’s leave those winter blacks and browns behind, and look for some bright and sunny leotards, or some tutus in gorgeous new shades.

This season I’m absolutely smitten with pastel shades. Think baby blues and lilac, all those gorgeous springtime pastels. Or perhaps for you bolder dancers, why not some fiery oranges or shocking pink. They’ll pop and shimmer like fireworks, catching the eye of every dancer and spectator!

The other great trend that I’m loving is texture. Yes, you heard me right! Lace has become absolutely fashionable in the dance world right now! Not those stiff, scratchy laces either, think delicate tulle layers with gorgeous sequin accents! The possibilities are limitless. Add some pretty silk ribbon ties or embellishments like pearls and bows for a truly beautiful look.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, create the world’s most stylish tutu or leotard! Look, there’s nothing wrong with sticking with what works, but let’s be honest darling, sometimes you just want to experiment and try something new. I get it! We’ve all been there.

You may be thinking ‘But what do I need?’ I’ll tell you!

Here’s what you need
  • An affordable tulle, perhaps one with sparkle! The key is to find the right type for your chosen style, as a beginner.
  • A stylish leotard that really complements your body shape! One which can either work with a tulle, or that’s eye-catching on its own!
  • And for our adventurous creatives, sequins! Always sequins! So much glitz!
  • Some matching fabric to add extra layers.
  • Don’t forget ribbon for ties.
  • Thread in various colours and an embroidery needle or sewing machine!
Where to find the good stuff:

These can all be found on sites like Etsy or on various dance retailers online or at local dancewear shops.

And one final tip, take your time. I’ve been doing this for over forty years! The most successful costume designs I've created happened when I was relaxed and took my time. So breathe, allow yourself some space and just enjoy creating your own masterpieces.
