Pink Tutu Design and Make at www pink tutu com

Darling, it's March, and with spring just around the corner, it's time to update our wardrobe. Nothing says springtime like a chic, new tutu or leotard! This season, think whimsical, playful and, most importantly, YOU! Forget the same old black or pink - let's unleash our inner muse and design a statement piece that will turn heads in the studio.

The Perfect Tutu:

A tutu can be the ultimate stage prop. And it's definitely all about the *frills* this season, my darlings! I’m loving the idea of layering fluffy, pastel tutus over more structured ones for that added dimension and, dare I say, “princess chic” vibe! Remember, darling, there are no rules here. This is about embracing your artistic vision. And who am I to tell you to wear anything but hot pink sequins? Let's make our tutus our *own*!

What you’ll need:

  • A classic, single layer, tutu (white or pale pink works well) - available from online retailers or most ballet stores
  • A small pastel tutu (such as lavender or baby blue), again available in online stores
  • Fabric Glue or safety pins - (avoid using hot glue as it will melt fabric)
  • Sewing machine - this is not necessary, but helps to secure materials properly. If you do not have access to a machine a simple hand stitch with strong thread will do
  • Some feathers or sparkly tulle strips - get these online, craft stores and you might even be lucky to find them at charity shops
  • Satin ribbons or bias binding - any colour!

To create your masterpiece:

  • Layer your tutus - put the single-layer tutu first and then the smaller one on top, it might be necessary to cut and/or gather some tulle if they do not fit properly
  • Add some feather-light embellishment. This is your opportunity to inject your personality! A few feathers along the side seam or a simple touch of sequins can add a dash of opulence. Experiment, play with different textures and embrace that artistic spirit!
  • Secure it! You can use fabric glue to attach embellishments or hand stitch the more delicate ones with strong thread - use safety pins temporarily when trying things out
  • Give your new tutu some definition by adding a satin ribbon at the top (using the bias binding can help to give some body to the material if needed)

A New Take On the Leotard:

This is where things get exciting, darling! The modern leotard should scream *elegance* and a bit of *playfulness.* Gone are the days of plain, uninspiring silhouettes. Instead, I’m thinking flowing, draped material, interesting necklines, and of course, a touch of glitter - always, always glitter!

What you will need:

  • A basic, stretch cotton leotard (choose a simple cut and colour that you can transform)
  • Chiffon fabric or stretch net (buy enough for your embellishments - be generous and be prepared for mistakes)
  • Fabric Glue or needle and thread
  • Sewing machine - a machine makes this much easier to execute
  • Sparkles and sequins!
  • Matching fabric for finishing details
    • To make your new Leotard:

      • Consider the Neckline! This is an opportunity to bring personality to your piece. Experiment with small changes; think V-neck, sweetheart neckline or add a fabric ruffle or a dramatic, plunging neckline. Make it YOU, darling.
      • Be Bold! Layer with Chiffon fabric. Cut long rectangular strips, gather the material in the centre and attach it to your leotard as a skirt or a panel in the front or back (be careful about layering tulle over lycra; the material doesn't always stick to leotard fabric so careful use of safety pins or pins to hold materials before sewing together will help with precision) Use fabric glue if you want the layer to remain flowing, otherwise use a sewing machine for more structured design
      • Go For the Glam Factor! This is your opportunity to really express yourself, darling. Be daring - add sequin embellishments along the straps and sleeves and even consider adding more texture or different shades to the neckline.

Remember, darling, a stylish leotard should accentuate your unique dance moves! Let your personality shine through and, above all, have fun with the process!
