Darlings, it's June, and the air is filled with the scent of summer blossoms. What better way to celebrate this beautiful season than by designing our own fabulous tutus and leotards, for ourselves or perhaps a young darling, destined for the stage? It’s all about embracing the joy of movement and expression. Now, gather your sequins, your needles, and let’s create a dance-worthy ensemble! ?
The Ultimate Summer TutuA summer tutu, darling, needs to be light as air, yet with a touch of glamour to reflect the sunshine. We shall begin with a foundation of softest tulle. I recommend a shade of blush pink, it reflects the soft glow of the summer sun beautifully, though of course, a vibrant turquoise or a crisp white can also make a statement.
For this, you'll need:
* A roll of soft tulle in your chosen shade (available from your local dance supply shop, or online at sites like Ballet Superstore and Dancewear Outlet). * An elastic waistband (this should be purchased from a reputable fabric store, a quality elastic will not pinch or pull on delicate skin.) * A fine needle and thread, and possibly a sewing machine for ease.We shall add a delicate layer of silver embroidery floss, shimmering like dewdrops on petals, to the tutu's edge for that touch of magic. Of course, you could add a splash of your favourite color to create your own personal style. Imagine delicate butterfly wings created with shimmering sequins. Or, a garland of pastel-colored flowers cascading around the hem.
For your embellishments:
* A spool of silver embroidery floss (most haberdasheries stock a wide array of colours. You can also get these online.) * Small iridescent sequins, available from fabric stores or craft shops * Tiny fabric flowers of delicate shades, in the colour of your choice.Sew these accents on by hand. The slowness and care of this process creates a piece with love at its heart.
The Leotard of DreamsA leotard must be, dare I say, quite frankly divine. For summer, we are looking for something that reflects the fresh joy of dancing outdoors.
I recommend a classic sleeveless leotard design. Perhaps a light turquoise or sunshine yellow. We'll add some panache by incorporating a touch of silk that will feel luxuriously soft against your skin and dance beautifully.
You will need:
* A simple sleeveless leotard in your desired color, available at most dancewear shops or online * A length of shimmering silk ribbon (this can be found at most fabric stores, and be certain it’s a kind that drapes and moves well. Organza silk ribbon will flow beautifully) * Sewing pins to help attach the ribbon securely to the leotard, and of course a needle and thread, or a sewing machine if you are a whiz at those!Wrap a long strip of silk ribbon, maybe in a hue of blush pink or vibrant lilac, around the waistline of your chosen leotard, with the ends cascading down the sides like ethereal wisps of silk.
Voila! Our little dance costume is ready. Add a touch of whimsy by adorning a hairband with sparkling hair accessories.
Now you have the foundation to take to the floor or a dazzling event.
And remember darlings, what matters most is how it makes YOU feel. Have fun with it, let your creativity shine, and let the magic of dance move through you!
Stay fabulous, my dears, and keep on dancing! ?
