Pink Tutu Design and Make at www pink tutu com

Darling! December is upon us, and as the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder, our passion for ballet shouldn't waver! But as a true aficionado, you know it's not just about the performance; it's about the *look*. And darling, this month, we're setting trends, not following them. So, let's dive into creating a tutu or leotard that's sure to turn heads!

First, consider your inspiration. This December, I'm channeling the spirit of the season - think delicate snowflakes, frosty winter scenes, and the soft sparkle of a twinkling star. You're looking for a look that's simultaneously elegant and dramatic. Think 'modern classic', darling. Not your grandma's tutus.

Now, let's gather our tools:

  • A classic tulle skirt, ideally in a shade of powder blue or pale silver. You can find these at most dancewear stores, and don't shy away from experimenting with a couple of different shades. Remember, we want a soft, ethereal look! You might even find an already sparkly one for extra shimmer.
  • A black leotard. It's essential for a structured look, a sharp contrast against the soft tulle, and a classic ballet element that will never go out of style.
  • A luxurious velvet ribbon - rich burgundy or forest green are my current favourites. We're using this for the pièce de résistance. Look for something soft but structured, which will create a beautifully elegant drape.
  • A collection of delicate diamante embellishments - choose some small ones for subtlety and perhaps one larger star-shaped diamante to highlight the centre of the tulle skirt. These can be found in most craft stores, or even on Etsy.
  • Strong, yet soft fabric glue for attaching your diamantes. Be careful with delicate materials and avoid harsh adhesives. Always test in an inconspicuous spot first, darling!
  • A few small pearls and sequins, in shades that complement your colour palette.
  • Sewing needle and thread, or a sewing machine, if you feel confident. A sewing machine will provide greater precision, particularly with attaching your velvet ribbon and pearls. This stage may also be a good opportunity to get a second opinion, from a fellow dancer or a friendly tailor!

Now, let's create magic:

  1. Start with the tutu - if your tulle isn't pre-layered, now is the time to add some drama. Double it up, create an asymmetric look with more tulle on one side, or experiment with multiple layers for that dreamy, multi-dimensional feel. Consider even adding some fine glitter or spray, for extra twinkle.
  2. Now, the ribbon. Start by carefully measuring and cutting it to your desired length - perhaps an elegant loop that drapes over the side of your waist? Use the sewing machine or needle to attach the velvet ribbon neatly and securely to the centre back of the tulle skirt. You'll need some strong threads or elastic for this. You want it to stay put on your perfect ballerina curves.
  3. Let's embellish! The key is subtlety and elegance, so be sure to work with your design beforehand. Start with placing your chosen diamante for a 'center-piece' - you can experiment with position and placement to see what suits the overall style. This will be our starting point. Using your chosen diamante as your focal point, delicately and gradually add smaller embellishments in a cascading or circular pattern around it. We want to guide the eye and keep it focused.
  4. And finally, complete your leotard ensemble by adding delicate pearls to your velvet ribbon or in subtle patterns around your bodice.

Voila! Your bespoke leotard or tutu is complete! Practice wearing it with your perfect smile and confident air and, darling, you'll be turning heads and captivating hearts in no time.
