January's Most Enchanting Tutu - Make it Yours

Darling, January always feels so fresh and exciting! It’s the perfect time to make a statement, both on and off the stage. This month’s trend is all about taking the classic, romantic tutu and giving it a touch of something *extra*… let's call it a touch of "dramatic"! Here’s the lowdown on crafting a tutu that will absolutely take your breath away, darling! Think layers upon layers of the finest tulle in shimmering colours. This year, we're all about capturing the sparkle of the snow – icy blues, pale lavender, and pearlescent white are your new best friends. To give it that modern edge, why not add a touch of bold metallic silver or a touch of gold in those cascading layers? Imagine that movement – truly captivating!

To get started you will need…

  • 20 yards of good quality, soft tulle in your chosen shade. (Available from your favourite ballet suppliers or online: Try these, dear)
  • 1.5 yards of silky satin ribbon, wider than usual (ideally, around 2 inches!) – something sumptuous in black or a dramatic emerald green. (Have a look at Etsy, you will be surprised at the fabulous options there)
  • An existing tutu base, or at least 10 yards of elastic. (Let’s make it sturdy for all those twirls – trust me! Again, look online for elastic, your nearest sewing shop or your favourite ballet supplier).
  • Scissors and safety pins for assembly.
  • One gorgeous leotard that truly complements your new masterpiece! (My suggestion, sweetheart, would be a deep crimson leotard. A timeless, elegant choice, perfectly accented by the layers of shimmering tulle). Don’t forget the gorgeous, dazzlingly embellished bodysuit options! See here. But have fun, there are so many great shops!).

Don’t be intimidated darling. It’s easy. Start by tying a large circle in your satin ribbon and secure this around the bottom of your tutu base (or the elastic band, secured to your hips) with a safety pin. Then, create neat ruffles of tulle – roughly three or four inches wide, and tie them onto your ribbon with safety pins – all the way round. Then gather some extra tulle in the very centre and let those float about dramatically in every pose – just *delicious*. There you have it, darling. Your own stunning, unique design that will make all eyes be on you. Have fun. Go out and *rock* that tutu!
