Darling, July is upon us! Summer has finally arrived and that means it's time to unleash your inner ballerina in a style that's as captivating as a summer's day. We're talking about the ultimate tutu, the one that will make heads turn and your pirouettes soar to new heights!
As an experienced dancer, I know exactly how to create the most stunning tutu. It’s all about marrying the right materials with an elegant touch. It’s not about the latest fashion trends, it's about embodying that graceful elegance we all love. Imagine flowing through the studio or on stage in a tutu so effortlessly exquisite, that every twirl will become a breathtaking masterpiece. So gather your supplies, ladies, it's time to unleash our inner couturieres.
Essential Supplies:
- Tulle: Don’t just grab any old tulle. I love the flowy, light feel of Italian tulle. This year, think pastel pinks or, if you’re feeling bold, a touch of neon. It’ll truly make the stage glow!
- Elastic: A good, strong elastic will be your trusty sidekick! I love the ones with a touch of shimmer. This adds a subtle touch of sophistication to the design.
- Scissors: Remember to use sharp scissors that allow you to get a clean cut.
- Sewing machine and needle & thread: Don't forget this part, darlings. Precision is key when sewing together our tulle! If you are less experienced with the machine you can still manage with needle and thread - it'll just take a bit more time and love.
- Embellishments: Now we can get creative. This is where your vision for your summer masterpiece really takes shape. Perhaps a single sparkling brooch in the centre for that glamorous, almost couture-inspired feel? Think pearls or ribbons.
- Ribbons (optional): Ribbons add that feminine touch, and for this season I’m drawn to velvet. The deep purple shades pair so nicely with that delicate, pale pink tulle.
Where to find them?
- Tulle: Etsy offers an abundance of wonderful colours. The craftsmanship of individual makers is incredible.
- Elastic: Local sewing stores have great ranges of elasticities, often at cheaper prices than online retailers.
- Scissors: Any good crafting store will have them.
- Sewing machine and needles: Online giants like Amazon will have all your essentials. If you'd rather buy from independent companies check out a dedicated online crafting shop!
- Embellishments: Beads galore and pearls oh my! Any high street store like John Lewis, House of Fraser, or a shop like Liberty will stock endless creative embellishments!
- Ribbons: If you need silk or velvet, local dressmakers shops or even haberdasheries often stock amazing fabrics in bulk!
Get Creative:
- Cut your tulle: This is where it starts to get exciting! Remember, the way you cut the tulle will influence how your tutu drapes. Want a fuller skirt? Make those layers wide. Want a more streamlined, classic look? Cut those panels narrower. Experiment!
- Assemble your tulle layers: Gather the layers. I find it works best to work with them in pairs to maintain a bit more order. Remember that less is more when it comes to the tutu, let the layers speak for themselves. If you do layer, consider using a contrast colour or using different textured tulle. It’s all about balance, my dears.
- Sew them together: Use that machine to secure the panels or, for those using a needle, create elegant running stitches. Try to work as neatly as possible and if it gets messy, cover with those sparkly ribbons or elegant embellishments.
- Attach the elastic: Take the time to make the waistband the perfect fit and hide the seams of the elastic to give that refined finish!
- Embellish: It's your signature touch! Play with colour, shape and sparkle. Make that embellishment sing, so to speak! I like to choose something subtle and just add a few to each panel – perhaps four tiny pearlescent flowers in the corners. Or a central focal point on the front of the waistband. Don’t over do it - remember we want a clean and sleek line to the eye, a beautiful shape.
There you have it, darling! The most beautiful tutu you'll ever dance in. Feel the summer sun on your skin and dance with the grace of a butterfly.
