Pink Tutu Design and Make at www pink tutu com

Darling, let's face it, we've all been there - staring into our dressing room mirror, longing for the perfect tutu to make us the envy of every prima ballerina. A garment that speaks of ethereal elegance, whispered confidence, and undeniable grace.

Well, this February, it's time to ditch the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary. It's time to design your own, utterly iconic, tutu! The one that will become the season's most sought-after look. The one that will be copied by every dancer on every stage! I know what you're thinking: “Designing a tutu? It’s intimidating!” Not at all! A little inspiration, some chic fabric choices, and a touch of daring flair - it’s truly as simple as “1, 2, 3”!

Your Tutu: A Masterclass in Design

Darling, there are only two things you need to consider: the bodice, and the skirt. Let’s be realistic - there is no shortage of fabulous bodice options already available, and these days they are truly all perfectly crafted! We need to focus on the star of the show: the skirt! Here’s how to take it from basic to simply sublime.

  • **Choose your layers**: I am a firm believer in the more, the merrier. Four or even five layers add structure and give the impression of movement before you even take a single pirouette.
  • **Think "Peekaboo"**: Dare to expose some leg, darling! Keep your layers from the fullest around your knees to let those legs steal the show.
  • **Embellish!**: Nothing shouts "This is couture!" like some sparkling adornment. This can range from simple shimmering tulle that blends with your existing layers, to elegant sequins - and for the bold amongst us, a touch of feather or perhaps even diamante (in tasteful quantities, of course!).
  • **Length is key**: A short, flippy tutu is perfectly delightful - a beautiful dance with the floor as you move. Don’t be afraid to experiment with lengths. Perhaps a floor-sweeping cascade for a stunning grand allegro, or even an asymmetric effect - cut short in the front, gracefully longer at the back. This month, darling, let's break those tutu rules!
What You Will Need:
  • Tulle! I always start with a high quality nylon, and a minimum of 5 metres for your dream tutu. Check out suppliers like Sewn & Gone ( www.sewnandgone.co.uk) for an impeccable selection.
  • Elastic. The best thing about the ballet world is its simplicity. Find your perfect shade, (it’s about a centimetre thick - any thinner will show too easily!) and buy enough to secure the waist, at the bottom of your skirt layers, and if you choose, to embellish your bodice too.
  • Embellishment! If you go with simple shimmer, that’s readily available at Sewn & Gone. I recommend The Bead Shop for all those more daring options (including feathers and sequins!). Be sure to factor in embellishments that match your costume design. You don’t want the embellishments fighting for the spotlight!
  • Your favourite ballerina scissors, for the precise cutting (nothing like a pair with rounded edges) and a good seam ripper for that final check - and because we can’t all have perfect hands! (My favourite supplier for anything scissors-related is Sew Essential - www.sewesential.com)
  • Pins - good old reliable pins to secure your work whilst you build those magnificent layers!

That's it darling - the ingredients to a revolutionary creation! Remember, the world is your stage, your tutu is your canvas, and this month it’s time for us to turn heads! Until next month, darlings.
