October, 1996: The World on Pointe

My darlings, October is upon us, a time of change and exquisite artistry. The crisp autumn air carries the scent of turning leaves and promises a new season of stunning ballets. It's a month where, even on the most blustery London evening, the lights of the stage transport you to ethereal worlds. Here, from my privileged perch at the edge of the dance floor, is my curated selection of the best this month has to offer.

The Royal Opera House, London

Darling, how divine is Covent Garden this season! The exquisite new production of *Swan Lake*, featuring the always spectacular Alessandra Ferri, is an absolute must-see. Ferri is a true force of nature - she practically vibrates with talent! And what is more captivating than the dramatic contrast of the innocent white swan to the darker, almost alluring black swan? Oh, the pathos!

While we are on the topic of swans, be sure to catch the *La Bayadere* revival. This spectacular ballet, with its incredible sets and intricate choreography, takes the audience on a breathtaking journey from the opulent grandeur of a Rajah's palace to the enchanting mysteries of the Temple of Shiva. And the corps de ballet in the Kingdom of Shades, they are simply ethereal. Honestly, darling, one almost forgets to breathe!

And a sneak peek into next month's program: a new choreography by the maverick Wayne McGregor. You know me, darling, I'm always looking for something unique and fresh, and Mr McGregor certainly delivers. Apparently, he's pushing the boundaries of ballet with some "technological enhancements." I can't wait to see what it all entails - it's sure to be the talk of London society.

Across the Atlantic: New York City

Ah, New York City. It always has a certain energy, don't you find, dear? A vibrancy that, just like a great ballerina, explodes on stage. This month at the New York City Ballet, a special program celebrating the 100th anniversary of George Balanchine. Now, we all know, darling, that Mr Balanchine was the genius who reinvented ballet in the 20th century. I am especially excited to see "Serenade." It is considered a masterpiece for a reason. The lyrical and melancholic beauty of the movement, coupled with the effortless grace of the dancers, never fails to move me. Simply divine.

But what is more fashionable than the classical, you might ask? American Ballet Theatre offers a contemporary twist, featuring a new production by Alexei Ratmansky. His pieces are a perfect blend of traditional ballet technique with daring new movements. I understand this production includes innovative staging and special effects - it will certainly be an exciting and captivating performance.

A Glimpse into the Continent

My European friends, indulge in the romantic magic of the Parisian Opera Ballet, currently presenting the exquisite *Giselle*. The tragic love story, so powerfully portrayed in the ballet, always leaves a lasting impression. Be sure to watch for the beautiful and moving "Mad Scene" as Giselle loses her sanity in grief. You know me, darling, I am a sucker for pathos!

And, across the channel in Berlin, the Staatsballett Berlin is offering a unique production of *The Sleeping Beauty*, this time with a decidedly modern sensibility. Itโ€™s daring and unconventional and, I hear, promises to be a breath of fresh air in a world of classical revivals. If you want something truly unique, make your way to Berlin. It's just a hop, skip, and jump across the English Channel. I know I am!

Not just Ballet: A World of Performing Arts

Darling, this season isn't just about ballet, it is an absolute explosion of performing arts across the globe. Across the globe, theaters are ablaze with excitement and new creations.

  • I hear that Cirque du Soleil, ever the innovator, has a new show debuting in Paris. Imagine, dear, contortionists and acrobats swirling with an air of French decadence! It will be an assault on the senses - a captivating kaleidoscope of color and movement.
  • In Spain, flamenco dances through the heart of Madrid. It's the art form that exudes raw passion. Oh, it sets my heart ablaze!
  • And if you want something truly theatrical, look no further than the Broadway productions of New York City. There, musical magic unfolds on stages - truly captivating, dazzling, and sometimes tear-inducing!

No matter where you are in the world, dear, there are performances waiting to whisk you away to another time, another world. This month, indulge yourself, be transported, and let the dance ignite your senses.

Until next month, my darlings, dance your hearts out,

Love,

Gabrielle
