Oh darling, what a glorious month for the ballet! It's been whirlwind of glittering performances and exquisite shows, leaving this little old dancer completely invigorated. First, we dashed to Vienna for a delectable helping of "Giselle" at the Vienna State Opera. I must say, I was truly dazzled by the impeccable precision and exquisite artistry of the Vienna State Ballet. Their mastery of the classic repertoire, particularly with this enduring romantic tragedy, is breathtaking! The story of Giselle, the tragic heroine seduced by the charming yet deceitful Albrecht, is an enduring testament to the transformative power of love and despair. The pas de deux in Act II, with Giselle’s spectral embodiment weaving in and out of the wilis' icy choreography, sent chills down my spine. Truly unforgettable.
Then, it was on to the Bolshoi in Moscow for their phenomenal staging of "Swan Lake". This legendary company truly brought the classic to life, the energy of the entire ensemble captivating from start to finish. The beautiful Odette, rendered with exquisite poise and technical brilliance by the sublime Anya Pavlova, had the entire audience captivated. The sinister yet handsome Rothbart, embodied with dark intensity by Ivan Volkov, was masterful in his manipulation of fate and his portrayal of the villainous sorcerer. Of course, I've been to the Bolshoi many times over the years, but it was a reminder that the passion and skill they embody continues to transcend decades.
From Russia, with love, we jetted over to Paris for an avant-garde treat at the Opera Garnier. You see, darling, I do love my classic ballets, but it's always so refreshing to delve into a production that pushes the boundaries, that provokes and excites. The Pina Bausch production of "Cafe Müller" did exactly this. A mesmerizing whirlwind of raw emotion and stark movements, it showcased the powerful narratives within dance. Bausch’s innovative approach challenged traditional conventions and left a deep and profound impression upon us all. Such a powerful and raw production, truly something to behold, with its raw and passionate movements that leave the audience stunned. This was followed up by a sublime performance by the Paris Opera Ballet of "La Sylphide". The lighthearted choreography, filled with ethereal grace and ethereal dancing, contrasted so well with the brooding "Cafe Müller." We relished the stark juxtaposition, oh it was divine!
Now, as a ballet dancer, I must admit I always have a special fondness for my home country, England. This month, the Royal Ballet showcased their signature brilliance with a sumptuous rendition of "The Nutcracker". The stage design was magical, capturing the essence of childhood innocence, and the choreography, particularly the Sugarplum Fairy's dance and the enchanting "Waltz of the Flowers," transported the audience to a land of festive fantasy. My, how I adore a beautiful production of "The Nutcracker"! It truly warmed my soul. It's the ultimate celebration of magic and childhood wonder, beautifully brought to life by the exceptional dancers of the Royal Ballet.
And now, darling, for some fabulous and enchanting productions we saw around the world:-
We were truly charmed by the production of "Don Quixote" at the San Francisco Ballet. It's a timeless classic that the company imbued with vibrant energy and wit. The joyous and romantic choreography was delightful to watch and showcased the skill and grace of the dancers to its fullest. The dramatic story was captured with gusto and the dance showcased skill and elegance. What a pleasure to watch them waltz through such a magnificent ballet.
New York City Ballet took us by storm with "Serenade." Choreographed by George Balanchine, this ballet is an exquisite display of grace and athleticism. The dancers are magnificent; their precision, power, and fluidity are simply spellbinding. Every move is a joy to behold, showcasing the unique ability of ballet to speak a universal language.

The Nederlands Dans Theater brought its contemporary dance performance to London's Sadler’s Wells theatre and we couldn't get enough. A powerful and stirring dance work that pushed the boundaries of artistic expression, exploring the complexities of human emotion and physicality, I simply cannot recommend this enough.

Our final journey took us to Japan, and what a treat! We witnessed "Azuma" performed by the Japanese Ballet. This ethereal masterpiece offered a mystical experience, capturing the subtle beauty of Japanese aesthetics, using costumes and sets that showcased vibrant colors and stunning artistry. A captivating production, indeed.
So, as you can see, my darling, this has been a month of dance-filled wonders, from classical to contemporary. There was something for every taste. Now, we’ll retire to our drawing-rooms to practice our barre work and catch a snooze with a pot of Darjeeling tea and perhaps some Ballet magazine while dreaming of twirling ballerinas and captivating music.
