My dears, October! Can you believe it? The leaves are starting to turn, a nip in the air, and all those lovely cashmere scarves are making their glorious comeback. Ah, autumn, a time for reflection, contemplation...and, of course, the most magnificent ballets of the season. Now, don't tell me you're thinking about taking a little snooze after a long summer - I wouldn't dream of it! With my little black book chock-full of engagements, this month is jam-packed with must-sees from London to New York. Oh, and be sure to wear your finest jewels for these glittering affairs - no diamonds are too small for ballet!
London, My Love:
- The Royal Opera House is hosting a revival of Giselle, and I must tell you, darling, it's truly breathtaking. The company's young stars, these wispy ballerinas, they bring such depth and emotional resonance to the tragic tale of Giselle. Oh, and I must say, the costume design is positively divine, those sheer tulles fluttering about, so ethereal, so captivating.
- At Sadler's Wells, the Rambert Dance Company is showing off their incredible agility in a daring new piece. They call it "Kinetic", which frankly, sounds terribly utilitarian for such a modern work. But the dancers are absolute powerhouses. Just be warned, this isn't your predictable Swan Lake! Prepare to have your notions challenged, darling.
- Speaking of challenging, a hot young choreographer named Wayne McGregor is taking Covent Garden by storm. His new work "Tree of Codes" is quite avant-garde. Now, this might not be for everyone, it's full of those contemporary spins and leaps - a little on the rough side, I'll admit. But it's innovative and makes me positively giddy! You can just see the young things falling head over heels.
Across the Pond:
- Oh darling, you can never have too much Baryshnikov! Now, while you won't be seeing him twirl onstage this month, he's taking his latest masterpiece, The White Crow, on a national tour. A biographical dance drama about the life of the infamous Nureyev, you just know it'll be mesmerizing! And those costumes, so dramatic and beautifully tailored...the detail! Oh, Baryshnikov! The man has it all - talent, charisma...not to mention, he ages like a fine wine.
- And speaking of charisma, New York's City Ballet is staging The Sleeping Beauty. Itโs always an absolute joy. A real throwback to a time of princesses and magical woodland creatures! You'd be utterly delighted by the fairy costumes, those beautiful, diaphanous things that glitter under the stage lights! This is one of those classics that always takes my breath away - oh, to be that young again! But perhaps a pair of strategically placed diamantes will have the same effect...perhaps.
- Now, if you want something completely unique and bold, check out Martha Graham Dance Company's latest work. I believe they are doing Appalachian Spring at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. This piece isn't just about dancing, it's an explosion of art and emotion. This company is absolutely electrifying, their energy is something else! Do wear those daring shoes with a bit of sparkle.
Beyond the Big Apple:
- Now, who wants a romantic evening in Paris? They say the Seine is the most beautiful river, and, well, I have to agree. For the month of October, you can't go wrong with a show at the Opera Garnier! I believe there's a stunning new production of Romeo and Juliet. You know, that love story that makes even the most jaded soul sigh! It's perfect for an intimate candlelit dinner after the show - so romantic!
- Speaking of romance, who could possibly resist Swan Lake in Moscow's Bolshoi? The Bolshoi has been around for years and years, darling! This classic piece has such timeless beauty and emotion. They are renowned for their technique and that signature Bolshoi drama! If you love those grand tutus and glittering sets, this one will simply steal your heart! Be sure to indulge in a little caviar before the performance - nothing says ballet more than a touch of Russian flair.
- And finally, a quick trip to beautiful Buenos Aires. This month, the Argentine dance company "Tango Fuego" will be setting the stage alight. Now, tango isn't for everyone. It's a little sultry and can be downright scandalous at times. But these tango masters are truly skilled, they make those dramatic poses and dips look effortless, darling. There's such intensity, such fire in their steps! But don't get too carried away - these passionate tangos aren't just for dancing - they can leave you breathless and wanting more! So wear those sexy stiletto heels, and let yourself be swept off your feet by the rhythm!
Now, that's how you start your autumn! These performances are guaranteed to be utterly captivating. I can't wait to see all of these productions myself! I'll be sure to share all the latest news and whispers on my Instagram account - @BalletBessie. Now, go on, put on your favourite velvet dress and go make some magic!
